So after a dinner the other night, a few of us were talking about what the next big Track car will be. Right now the Miata and E30, and E36’s are the hot commodity. But what will come after that? Once the good examples are gone or something better and faster is found.

The possibilities we thought about were:
E46 - The three series may have gotten to heavy though
350Z – Prices are coming down, but will it catch on.
The NC Miata – My, look how much weight it’s gained.
The New Civic Si?
Solstice/Sky twins – It has definite potential
C6 vette - pricey for many

Thoughts?

As far as weight goes for the Miata, its not limited to just that car. Every car that is sold today is WAY heaver than previous models. Hell most Honda's are approaching 3000 lbs.

Good list. You might could add the New Mustang to the bunch as well as the Mazda 3 once they start coming down in price.

Define "track car". One to serve as HPDE/Daily driver, time trials or a race car?

All of the above,
Maybe the top of the list for each.

I also think that Toyota's upcoming small RWD car (SR5 successor) may make the short list as well.

If the no-fun police at Toyota let it see the light of day.

Seems very unlikely. No elegant way to fit rollover protection that I'm aware of. Same goes for the NC Miata. The top designs on both cars are problematic methinks (sort of like, I dunno, an S2000...)

The Mini will be a track star soon, not that it isn't already. Boxsters are getting cheaper and you can actually put rollover protection in one. I think the new Mustang will make a go of it too.

AWR makes for the NC Miata.

They also have one without a Petty bar but I am not sure if it is legal without it.

RX-8's can be had at $15,000. The power is a bit low, but has superb handling. Weigh under 3000 lbs. You can actually carry 4 adults and associated stuff.

C5 Z06's can be had for around mid twenties, Classified by most automotive magazines as a true super car. Still has to be the most bang for the buck of any of the above mentioned cars.

Regardless, it sounds like it calls for removal of the factory "roll hoops" and, as someone sitting in that situation, I wouldn't want to start pulling stuff out of my nice car's interior to facilitate rollover protection.

Mini and 05+ Mustang FTW on being the new track car, in my mind anyway. There was a Mustang GT Convertible at CMP this past weekend with a well engineered roll bar that was being driven very well...

Early Boxsters?

The main issue I see is the apparently inability to rebuild or easily tweak the engines on your own as well as the general lack of faith in the ability to track the newer watercooled six engines (oiling issues I believe).

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.
