I LOVE the Red Bull air races. VS. shows them sometimes and they air them live on the interweb.

The racers are the best airshow pilots in the world and, much like autocrossers, they buy the best aircraft for the race. Usually it is a different type of aircraft than they use during airshow displays.

Hitting a cone is a 10 second penalty (and you thought that 2 seconds was bad!!). They are made of sail cloth and rip apart VERY easily.

You also get penalized for flying too HIGH between the cones. You have to have the aircraft BELOW the line on the cone.

They had one race out in Monument Valley back in May, which was a beautiful setting. The next race is in Budapest on the 20th. It is a great race that is right in the middle of the city and they have to enter the course by flying UNDER a bridge. There is one more US race in San Diego on Sept 21st.

Very exciting stuff.

EDIT - I just found out that VS. isn't carrying the RBAR anymore. It is being broadcast on FSN. The broadcast schedule can be found at http://www.redbullairrace.com

OK, I promise, this is the last post I will make on this thread...maybe...

Here are the penalties and DQs that are assesed...

TIME PENALITES
Pilots are required to complete the course and fly between the air gates following a predetermined race track. Failure to do this correctly results in penalty seconds being added to their race time. For more serious breaches of the rules, pilots can also be disqualified.

PENALTY SECONDS
These can be added for an incorrect passing of an Air Gate, incorrect passing through the slalom gate, for performing a turning manoeuvre incorrectly and for touching a gate. These penalties are added to the pilot’s time at the end of each round.

Incorrect Passing of an Air Gate
A 3-second penalty is incurred when a pilot:
passes gates or chicane too high
performs an incorrect knife-edge (vertical) or level (horizontal) crossing
performs a knife-edge (vertical) crossing on the wrong side. This is when a pilot angles his plane to the left when it should have been to the right, or to the right when it should have been to the left.


Incorrect Turning Manoeuvre
A 3-second penalty is incurred when a pilot fails to perform a turning manoeuvre correctly.


Touching a Gate
A 10-second penalty is incurred when a pilot:
touches a pylon with the wing or propeller (if considered dangerous it could result in disqualification).



DISQUALIFICATION
Pilots can be disqualified for dangerous flying or not flying the course correctly.



Dangerous Flying
any form of dangerous flying
dangerous approach
flying too low
crossing the crowd line



Not Flying the Course
deviation from the prescribed course
failure to execute a prescribed turning manoeuvre
