No way I could afford to keep you boys cool. I think Stephen sweats at any temp above 65F. I'm comfortable between 78-82.

My god...67 degrees here for nightime sleeping in the summer. 71 degrees for daytime temps. I'd like to go as low as 60 for the winter but my wife won't have it.

Damn, guess I need to buy some more Progress energy stock.

We keep it ~80-82 during the day in summer, IF we have the AC on. Goes to ~78 or so at night during summer- but we'll turn it off and open windows if it's going to get down to the low 60's and the humidity is not insane. Winter it stays at or below 65 (unless the mother-in-law is visiting), usually down to around 60 or so at night. Sure I'd like to have it a bit cooler sometimes, but I'm used to it, and I can really appreciate it when the power bill arrives.......

My sisters family keeps it about 70-75 all year 'round, her kids run around in the middle of winter barefoot in shorts and t-shirts. We don't have to wear winter survival gear during winter in this house, but you do want to have shoes, socks and long sleeve shirt + pants on or you might catch a chill.... :)

I have a 25+ year old GE unit (GE later became Trane) and put in a top of the line high efficiency multi-speed Trane heat pump system last year to replace a 10 year old Carrier that self destructed. I wouldn't touch a Carrier over a Trane any day of the week - but we all have our experiences. Dealer support horrible for Trane? I wouldn't know - never had to call.

Probably the biggest factor is how good the dealer is.The guy we used who had just started in business relatively recently and had been working in our neighborhood replacing systems started out OK, then as he grew and started expanding and doing whole subdivisions he got to the point of not returning phone calls, not servicing and being a total dhead. Escalating to Trane was no help as they just said to go back to the dealer. Since then we have tried small companies and larger and have had good luck with Airmakers.

I do think that Trane makes a good product, however, what I have heard universally from all the companies is that their parts are 2X others.

You know what's funny? I posted this on rr-ax.com too, and got the same pattern. There's say five people on each that have a brand they tell me to avoid, and a brand they tell me to buy because they're the best. Unfortunately, everyone's story is different...

The guy Mom uses apparently told her it doesn't much matter, because all of them these days will die inside of 10 years anyway...

Service Experts still a no show at the present time.

I would tend to agree (the 10 yr statement).

A number of years ago (previous home) we replaced the entire system (internal air handler with a new variable speed blower, etc. as well as the external unit) with a high efficiency unit. At the time we were able to get a very low rate loan from Duke power because it was a high efficiency unit. I was amazed at how much the electric bill dropped with the newer unit.

It is also interesting that this has yet to degrade into a fight about "big" of a unit to install.

Well, the good news just abounds here in Durham. The fan has quit on the air handler and there's at least one wire that's melted clean through. So right out of the gate I'd say this doesn't look promising.

Finally, some good news! It was the relay that turns the fan on and off. Turns out the fan is drawing 3 amps instead of the expected 2. Which is bad, and the tech doesn't know how long it'll run like this. But at least, this will give me some time to squirrel money away to just buy another system.

Interestingly, the tech (who drag races and we chatted for about an hour about the trophies and the S2000) said the unit to get is a Lennox...

I thought they made china. I guess I'm not up on A/C units.

Geez, this seems to be the season for relay failures... I'm glad it's at least an easy (if only temporary) fix Karl. Good luck to ya. :toast:

Just a minor update. I'm pretty impressed with Service Experts as far as servicing the troublesome, nine year old AC in my house. The guy who comes out - it's been the same guy the last couple times - always gives me a bit of an education on how these things work, and always seems to find the "Cheap Fix" when I ask him to. Always on time and their prices seem reasonable to me. I'm sticking with them.

We have been using Service Experts since they were Piedmont (i.e. since the late 80's). We are on our second pair of Lennox heat pumps. About 10 years out of the first pair. FYI I think we have seen the tech you mentioned a few times. He LOVES to talk cars and to modify them a lot.

Good to know...they are coming out to estimate replacing one of my dying Carrier systems with a Lennox system. Cool thing is that whatever they do to get me running today will be deducted from the massive outlay for the new Lennox. I'm impressed with the guy that I spoke to today as he readily supplied me with information showing that I can get what I wanted in terms of efficiencies for less cost than I researched on line. I'll give an update after the quoting and installation take place for those of you monitoring this thread.
