I was getting pretty scared about registering my car hauler. It was purchased used, from a state that does not require a title for trailers, and didn't have a VIN. At least I bought it from a friend, so I was sure it wasn't stolen.

Anyway, the process was simpler than I thought.
1)Goto DMV tag office, fill out the "application for a home-made trailer VIN" (this form assigns a VIN which you must stamp into the axles and frame near the tongue). I recommend stamping into the axle tag, to eliminate fatigue cracks through the numbers - YES it happens.

2)bring the form and trailer to local Highway Patrol office for inspection. They look at the trailer for about 5 seconds, verify stamped VIN in tongue and ask if you have stamped the axles so they don't get dirty climbing under.

3)bring signed form back to tag office. They will charge you highway use tax , and you'll get a title and plates.

Furthermore, I learned that my 4Runner's registration does not need to be altered for towing weight. They told me and SUV is registered as a passenger vehicle, and that the weight requirements are for pickups.

woo hoo!
