When I was towing for TRC I crossed the Chessapeak (sp) bay bridge. I payed my toll and thought it was odd that he charged me for 3 axles. I pulled over at a store in a couple of blocks after exiting the bridge to find that I was missing a wheel. I sheared 8 studs and lost a load range E tire and wheel on the bridge. About 6 months later the same position on the trailer did it again going through Richmond Va. I saw the wheel leave this time. I was going south bound and the wheel went across the south bound lanes and also the north bound lanes without collecting anybody. The second time we were able to get better replacement studs. And yes I did check lug nuts and tire pressures daily. I also checked tire tempsand hub temps by hand each time I stopped. That trailer loaded 2 6000 lb axles to 14,000 lbs. all the time.

I still remember years ago slowing down on a back road, only to be passed by the trailer tire. It seemed to roll forever down the road.

My friend Mike Blankenship told me this story he heard from a customer at the Precision Tune that Mike ran.

The customer had a Dodge D50 pick up that looked very good but had a new motor in it. The guy towed it behind his motorhome. On one trip he was yelling at the kids as he hooked up the D50. He set off up the ramp on the Interstate but noticed the motor home was kind of slugish. Once it got to about 55 mph the extra drag abruptly stopped.

No it was not the parking brake. He had left the truck in 1st gear and it threw the rods through the side of the block and out the oil pan. The valves had also been intimate with the pistons.

Watch, "The Worlds Fastest Indian" and you can see how to fix that problem with a log and some rope.

I was not the person who speced out the trailer I had to tow. The guy who did forgot about the 1000 - 2000 lbs of gas cylinders and up to 500 lbs of gas analyzers I had to carry. The axles were rated for 6000 lbs but usually carried 7000 each. It was a two axle fifth wheel trailer that usually weighed about 15,000 lbs.

I have the World's Fastest Indian on DVD

Back on topic.... the rest of the story.

So I flip my trailer over to work on it yesterday and saw this:

Image

Hmmm its seems I have messed up more than the hub and wheel.

Image

WOW, what the hell happened there? I almost ripped the spring mount from the frame of the trailer! The others side wasnt as bad but was severely stressed.

Image

That's where the tire was rubbing the deck.

So here is my best CSI recreation of what happened:

1- Hit the big farkin' bump on the beltline near US401. That caused the spring mounts to nearly rip from the frame and the axle to move forward letting the tire contact the deck.

2- The poor tire (which was brand new) made it almost all the way home. But gave up the ghost somewhere outside of Greenville.

3- After the tire was gone I drug the rim until I saw sparks.

Two new hubs, two new bearing buddies, 1 new tire and 3' of 3/16" angle iron and it rolls like a champ. Total about $80 worth of stuff. I still need to get the angle iron welded to the frame as it is just bolted now.

Yeah, Ryan drives like an 80 year old man. Glad nothing really bad came of it.

This happened on my home from Roebling the 2nd time I used the trailer. Defective tire. I pulled the Duro tires off and went to a different brand. When it blew I really didn't notice it. The trailer was still following along with no issues. Another car pulled along side of me and flagged me. As soon as I started slowing down then I could feel it and the trailer started tugging.

Ryan -- how much would you guesstimate that your trailer weighs? I'm pretty sure that your setup is similar to mine with very low tongue weight.

Wild ass guess:

No tires (Nothing in the storage bin)- 155 lbs or thereabouts

With Tires and bin loaded up- 330 lbs or so.
