I've actually watched about ten hours of "Initial D" on DVD. These are the videos based on the Japanese manga books of "Initial D", which tells the tale of one kid who gets into drifting. I picked them up while I was in China.

Now here's the interesting thing: *all* the drifting actually takes place during races. All races are one car against another, and all are downhill on huge mountains.

Now _that_ sounds pretty cool. Not at all like the now manufactured drifting showboating exhibition "races".

I got to thinking about the whole drifting thing the other day at work. It occured to be that if it wasn't for auto-x, I would probably be driving like an idiot on the street instead of driving like an idiot around cones. So..If organized drifting events can get some of these young punks to stop driving like idiots on public streets, then I would consider that a good thing. Also I saw where GRM is going to be a sponser of some events, including the one at VIR during the Grand Am race weekend. Might have to check it out. (As a bonus, all of the pics I've seen of drifting evens show a bunch of hot girls watching. So I guess if the drifting sucks you can always look at the girls. :woo: )

OK, I saw a piece about drifting on TV the other day and had one question - What do they do for tires, I can't imagine buying a $500 set of tires and killing them on one day of drifting. Do you buy the $10.00 used tires and go get a sponsor.

I don't know, any "sport" that is judged on "style" points just isn't racing to me

That was a pretty interesting video clip. That was some pretty impressive driving without the benefit of the "seat of the pants" feel.
As for the wuestion about using cheap tires, the "GRM" article stated the high traction rubber was pretty much a necessity. The cheaper tires are easier to break loose, but harder to control.
If you want to see some "down and dirty" drifting, come out to the rally-X coming up.
