One of our own involved in tragic accident

Posted May 4th 2007 7:30AM by John Neff
As some of you have already learned, one of our most valued members of the Autoblog team, Frank Filipponio, was involved in a car accident on Wednesday evening that resulted in the death of a female pedestrian. Our thoughts go
out to everyone involved in this tragic situation, and we appreciate those who have expressed their own sympathies for Frank and the victim's family.

Frank hasn't posted on Autoblog since the accident, though some posts he wrote earlier that day were published on the site after the accident occurred. We don't know when he will return to posting on the site, but will definitely miss his contributions until that time.

Woman often walked same path
Police say driver crashed Mustang into state park in Newport.
By RYAN HAMMILL
The Orange County Register

NEWPORT BEACH – After years of personal struggles, Lori Jamieson had finally reached contentment in her life. She was engaged to be married, life with her family was good and she was involved in her church.

It was a state of happiness she didn't get to enjoy for long.

Police said Jamieson, a 48-year-old Irvine resident, was struck and killed Wednesday night by a car that lost control and careened off Pacific Coast Highway, near the east entrance to Crystal Cove State Park, before running her over on a park trail.

Described as "the definition of health" by friends and family, Jamieson walked the same path regularly with Teri Iannotti, her friend of more than 35 years.

"We were laughing shoulder-to-shoulder and she was telling me how happy she was to be getting married," said Iannotti, a Laguna Beach resident who was with Jamieson when she was killed. "Then we heard a terrible screech and saw the car traveling toward us at a terrible rate of speed. And in an instant, my friend was gone."

Newport Beach police investigators said it appears the driver of the car, Frank Filipponio, lost control of his 2007 Ford Mustang GT-500 as he attempted to shift gears in the high-powered vehicle between Ruby's Date Shack and Crystal Heights Road.

Filipponio, 37, of Irvine was questioned and released at the scene. He did not return calls for comment Thursday.

There is no suspicion that drugs or alcohol contributed to the crash, police said.

Paramedics transported Jamieson to Hoag Hospital in Newport Beach, where she was pronounced dead.

Newly engaged to her fiancé, Joe Klema, Jamieson was working as a mortgage broker after years as an aerobics and athletic trainer. Later on in life she had begun donating time at Mariner's Church in Irvine and teaching at a camp for foster children.

Victim Identified In Fatal Newport Beach Crash
Lori Jamieson Of Irvine, 48, Was Killed Wednesday Night

(CBS) NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. Authorities have identified the woman who was struck by a convertible Mustang at the entrance to Crystal Cove Park in Newport Beach.

Lori Jamieson of Irvine, 48, was walking next to a bike path on Pacific Coast Highway when the accident happened right after 7 p.m. Wednesday night, authorities said.

Frank A. Filipponio, 37, was behind the wheel of the 2007 Mustang GT500. He was transported to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian with minor injuries and released shortly afterward, police said.

Filipponio has not been cited or charged in connection with the fatal wreck, pending the outcome of a police investigation. Police have said drugs and alcohol did not appear to have been a factor in the accident.
