I am starting a thread about my upcoming One Lap adventures. As most of you know, Peter Leir and I will be attempting to finish and hopefully do well in, One Lap of America next month in a very nice e46 M3 (http://www.onelapofamerica.com). This is a 4,000+ mile event around the country where we race at several of the country's best race tracks. One of the cool aspects of this race is that many teams run the race for a charity. The charity that Peter and I are running for is Donate Life.

Donate Life America is a not-for-profit alliance of national organizations and local coalitions across the United States dedicated to inspiring all people to save and enhance lives through organ, eye and tissue donation.

As some of you are aware, the need for organ donation is very close to my heart. My mother is ill with kidney failure right now. She is awaiting a transplant. I, along with others in my family, are currently going through the process of being tested and evaluated for a match with my mother, in hopes of be able to donate one of our healthy kidneys to her before she is forced onto dialysis.

With the charity aspect of One Lap of America, I think it is a great time to try and raise some money for Donate Life. If you think this cause is worthy, if you understand the importance of organ donations, if you have spare change... please take the time to donate what you can to this great cause.

Please use the PayPal donation box on the bottom of every http://www.autocrossforum.com page to donate. In the 'payment for' text entry box, please enter Donate Life. This will separate the money in my paypal account and will allow me to easily pull that money aside and send it to Donate Life after our One Lap trip.

Thank you for taking the time to read this. Now, please donate. Every penny helps.

I would like to donate to that cause, and would like to do so in a manner that allows you to get some recognition for it. If I do it via paypal, though, will I get some form of official receipt that I can use for tax purposes?

This is an important issue and a great cause. Jason Ray, one of the students who dressed up as the UNC mascot, Ramesses, died recently after being struck by a vehicle. He was not only an organ donor, but a strong advocate for organ donation. As such, his organs have already helped save other lives. There's no replacement for the loss of a loved one, but knowing that they helped someone else live goes a long way to help the healing...

Donnie - unfortunately, I have not figured out a way to get you a receipt for tax purposes with this form of donation (paypal). BUT, if you want to donate directly to DonateLife that would be appreciated just as much. Just let me know privately what your donation was so I can 'count' it towards my goal. My main goal is to raise awareness and some money for the cause. If it goes through me, or is made directly to DonateLife it makes no difference to me.

Thank you for your support to this very deserving cause.

OK - Donnie has stepped up (Thanks a ton Donnie). I know there are others in the club that want to help out. We need to double the donations we have received so far in order to hit our target.

Please help us out by donating to the cause. It is very worthy!

I will give a free fun run in my STS2 miata to anyone that donates $25 or more. Donate $100 and I will let you co-drive the car at any Tarheel event I will be at. I know... not as exciting as my recently sold z06, but still a fun car none the less.

Come on -- donate today!

Well, it's better than having to drive an STS2 car. The only thing worse than that would be having to drive Feinberg's car. ;)

It's sort of analogous to riding a moped...it's probably fun to do, but I wouldn't want anyone to see me doing it. *cough*

And obviously, I'm *really* just kidding you guys here. Well, mostly.

I'm broke right now unfortunately, so I got no money for you, but I have a question about organ donation

Does simply saying you want to be an organ donor when you get your driver's license (and having the little heart on there) actually make you one, or do you need to do anything else?

Good question Brice and the answer is no.

Having your license marked by the state is good, but unfortunately it isn't enough. You need to make sure that EVERYONE in your family is aware or your desire to be an organ donor. All it takes is one family member to say "I don't want his organs harvested" to make the harvest illegal. Doctors cannot override a family's wishes just because of a mark on a DL. One way around this is to go to WWW.DONATELIFE.NET and click the "commit to donate" button. From there you can find out what is required for your state to become an organ donor.

HERE is a link to the North Carolina Universal Donar Card that is legal in all 50 states.

The most important thing is to talk to your family. If they do not know your wishes, they can't carry them out.

Thank you to everyone who is helping support this cause.

EDIT: HERE is an article from the Jan-Feb 2004 NC Medical Journal about being an organ and tissue donor.
