Well, the Excursion will be due a new set of tires in the next month or so. Stock tire size is 265/75/R16. I'm probably towing close to 6k lbs.

Suggestions?

TIA

welcome to my nightmare Kevin. i am on my third set of tires @90K. stock BFG's were good thru 38K. next bridgestone revo's which started wearing out with less then 30k on them. they may be good for a half ton, but not worth a damn on a heavy truck.

michelin LTX MS. i have 20k on them and except for the fact that i have not yet rotated them (who has time?) they are wearing well. bad news is they are not cheap. TireRack has them in stock.

in a few months I may have an opinion on some pirelli AT's, but they are on a half ton pick-up.

the OEM BFG's were AT's and probably not a bad tire. something i didn't like about them but don't remember what. be careful with highway tires on that truck because as i have found they are no good on wet grass. my prior F350 had pirelli street tires and they were not worth a damn on grass.

My co-driver has an Excursion he just put Yokohoma Geolander's on. They are load rated E and pretty inexpensive. They balanced up nicely and so far he has about 3k miles on them with no problems. - AB

I have geolander's on my pathfinder and they've been great so far. I've got about 20k on them and they look barely worn. They are also pretty quiet.

At the glass shop we had a set of Geolanders on my heavily loaded G20 Chevy van. We got over 30k miles out of them with a worn out front end. They also balanced nicely and stayed in balance for most of their life. They put Maxxis something 750s on next. Those will probably give about 25k miles of life.

i was at Mark's the other day and a customer with a f250 was returning his yoko's. however i do believe they may have been D rated and that doesn't work if you load your truck. what tire is on there now?

these are heavy trucks. some days i wonder if there is a decent tire out there for this application.

Kevin, I'm not sure how many miles you've got on her now, but those tires were brand new when I bought that truck at 44K miles or so - pretty sure Carmax put them on. So, I figure they lasted at least 50K or thereabouts just when I had it, plus however many miles you've put on them. Under my ownership, they were always great in the rain, a little noisy in the dry, and always stayed in balance well. Wear, from what I remember, was pretty even. You might consider getting another set of those. I'm pretty sure Oscar told me they're simply rebranded Goodyears of some sort.

My Suburban, which I bought from GH Sharp, came with Michelin LTXs on it (of course) and they were great. I ended up replacing them with Pirelli Scorpion STs, which I quite liked - but I sold that truck too soon to be able to offer you any useful data on wear rates.

Otherwise, the Michelin LTX is the tire to have on those trucks. They wear like iron, ride like a dream and are great in the rain. Bowie and Nicholson both swear by them on their 250s. Pretty sure Matt Graham has them on his Excursion too.

Go ahead and throw down on the Michelins. That truck's worth it

Another recommendation for the Michelin LTX's. I've had them on several vehicles now. They wear great, are quiet, ride great, and as mentioned are GREAT in the rain. IMHO, they are well worth the money.

I would pretty much agree with the recommendations here. When it comes to a durable, quiet tire for a HD application, I have fewer complaints with the Michelins. I do sell a lot of the Pirelli Scorpion STR, but they tend to wear fast and not be as good in the rain. The Geolanders can be hit or miss. I would say that 85% of the time they have been a great tire, but like everything else, tires can be subjective and will aways require, a proper service interval and pressure is key.

I have Michelin LTX's on my F250 (essentially the same platform), and am very satisfied with them.

Another vote for the Michelin LTX MS. I have them on my F-250 with about 45k miles on them (all Highway). The truck always has a load on it, so I got the E load rated ones, which cost a little bit more. They are wearing great.

I had a set of Geolanders on or previous Tundra. I guess I'd be on of those who "missed" with them. They weren't horrible, except for the one that would drive you off the road (or into oncoming traffic) if it was mounted on the front end.

Pretty standard radial defect, but it started life on the rear and at the 6500 mile rotation, it had just enough wear to be out of warranty when I put it on the front (and discovered the problem).

I never really pursued replacement, I just left it on the back and rotated all the other tires.

I went back to the Kumho Ventures E rated on my Silverado 2500HD. I did go for the more aggressive AT this time. Great tires at an awesome price. I can't see paying $70 a tire more for the Michelin's. But it is your money :-)

Another vote for the Michelin LTX MS. Put them on the Suburban last fall. There much better than the BFG that was on it.
More expensive but you got what your paying for.
