Got this from Senator Joe Sam Queen. (Now THAT"S a name!) This guy must be a real dipstick. I explicitly asked what his position was on the bill. Here's his response:

Mr. Mackey,

It is good to hear from you. I very much appreciate representing you in the North Carolina Senate. I am very interested in your concern. I appreciate your letter and understand your concerns in regards to Senate Bill 673 and the addition of a front license plate.
Again, thank you for your input. Please, feel free to contact my office with any other questions or concerns.
Many Thanks,
Senator Joe Sam Queen

It might just mean he is keeping an open mind to both sides speaking optimistically.

That is a typical politicians answer. Thank the dear voter for his/her time and interest. Let him/her know they understand your concern. Promise absolutely nothing. Agree or disagree to absolutely nothing.

I'll bet you could send this guy an email saying you like or dislike anything currently being proposed and receive that same exact response. It's a blanket form answer.

Speaking pessimistically.

Or send him a response, acknowledge his lack of commitment to an issue that is important to you and that next time around, you will be voting for someone who supports the issues that are important to you.

Brad - send something like this back.

Mr. Queen,

It is good to hear from your secretary. I don't really appreciate you representing me in the North Carolina Senate. I am very interested in your lack of concern. I don't appreciate your form letter and can't understand your lack of concerns in regards to your re-election to the Senate.

Again, no thank you for your lack of input. Please, feel free to contact my office with any other questions or concerns about what you are going to do for a living after you are no longer a Senator.

Many Thanks,
Voter Brad Mackey

That's funny. Every politician supports whatever the person in front of them wants.

What his reply really represents is the fact that he does not represent you, but rather represents himself. I believe that Mike's reply is in order. Or perhaps you should copy the letter and send it back to him and ask just where in this correspondence he stated his position and cc it to the N&O.

Of course, the letter does not indicate anything other than Brad's correspondence was acknowledged. Since it is likely a form letter, we cannot infer that he has one side or the other in mind. The impact report will not be introduced until next week so not many if any of them know enough to have an opinion. So its good that we are voicing our sentiments early... before the report comes. What needs to happen is to get a copy of that report from the Senate librarian once it is released so we can see what the pitch is.

Far be it from me to defend a politician. But I've found most of the legislators that I have dealt with very approachable.

I sent this to the Bill's sponsor:

Dear Ms. Cowell,

We know you mean well with your proposal to add a second license tag to vehicles in North Carolina. However, your reasoning defies logic. If you feel that the license plate of a tailgating vehicle will be visible at night, through your mirror, below your rear bumper, with headlights glaring, I recommend you try it sometime.

And the police normally can’t see the front bumper of a fleeing car unless they have X-ray vision!

I, and my fellow car enthusiasts in North Carolina, strongly urge you to re-think your ill-conceived position in this matter and withdraw your bill from committee. It would mean more cost to the taxpayers of North Carolina and serve absolutely no useful purpose. Our membership is waiting for your response, which will be posted on forums throughout the U.S.

Sincerely,

Brad Mackey

I'm liking this guy so far. Too bad he's not a libertarian, I would go volunteer for his campaign.

Michael, I really doubt it. But having said that you never can tell.

Hello Mr. Hunt -

Thanks for the quick reply. So is there even a chance this bill will
pass?
If most members are against it, and if it is unlikely to pass, I won't
waste my time.

Regards,
Michael Whitney

Mike, if you have a nceuro login, can you update the list of forums this has been posted on? I posted it on mazda3forums in the NC owners section as well as North American Motoring (MINI forums).

Just because I'm too lazy to read the actual bill, can someone tell me what the reasoning behind the front plate is? It seems to me that the only thing it would do is increase the cost of creating plates which would in turn increase our cost to license our cars. So basically it is just a different way to tax the public. Gotta love that!
