Just wondering.

My Tom Tom One took me to 74, then 95, then 40. It seemed...circuitous. Was the Tom Tom wrong?

FWIW, it took me an extra half hour, at least, to get back...

The directions on the THSCC main page are better and take you through Wagram to US1N through Southern Pines and Sanford back to the Triangle.

I have not tried the other way, but from south Raleigh to Laurinburg taking 70 to 40 to 95 to 74 was two hours on the nose from house to pit. Coming back was a little bit of a cluster getting back onto 95, as the construction had me paralleling on an access road for a few miles before letting me get on 95.

Going to Durham though, it is probably signifigantly faster going US1.

(I was not in Laurinburg today, but I was there Saturday)

I forget the exact route, but I can probably post it next week. I used to follow the THSCC directions through Wagram, but that annoyed me so I tried my GPS. I now go straight up Airbase road till it ends. Turn left and follow that to 501 and turn north. That road goes back south for a ways, and if you're adventurous there are some smaller backroads that cut off the corner nicely instead of going quite so far south. But that's the easiest and quickest way, IMHO (even without the smaller backroads). You then just take 501N to US 1N and follow that back in.

Tom Tom needs a lesson in BACK ROADS.

I can cut 15-20 mins off that time to get back to 95. I used to take 74 all the way to 95. Its definitely the long way home.

Go straight out the GK entrance heading toward Maxton. Hang a Left at the stop sign on NC 71. Take NC 71 all the way thru Parkton to US301. Take US301 about 2 miles to I95.

NC71 isnt THAT bad. You have to slow down for a few little towns but its a major time saver. Randy Melton showed me this way a few years back.

EDIT: I had a personal best in getting home yesterday afternoon. 2:15 mins to Greenville, NC :woo:

Karl, if memory serves, you don't live that far from me. I can make the drive from my driveway to Laurinburg in about 1:45.

That's with a trailer attached.

My route (there) is:

751 to Hwy 64.
Right on hwy 64.

Hwy 64 for a few miles to Beaver Creek Rd.
Left on Beaver Creek (at the Exxon? station, this is one of the last turns before crossing the lake).

Follow Beaver Creek Rd for quite a few miles.
Turn Right on Pea Ridge Rd.

Follow Pea Ridge Rd. to Hwy 1.

Hwy 1 all the way to Southern Pines/Aberdeen, then back onto 15-501.

From 15-501 go Donnie's way or the normal way through Wagram. Now that there is a US 1 bypass it's pretty quick.

The alternate, "Patrice" route is to just take 751 all the way though to US-1. I found the 751 direct route to be less trailer friendly.

Karl,
Bernie and I do this: Taking Golden Knights exit, turn left onto Airbase Rd. Turn right at Airbase/Airport Rd fork. Follow Airbase Rd to Old Wire Rd. Left on Old Wire and almost immediately right on Arch McLean Rd. Follow Arch McLean Rd to 15/501 N. Turn right on 15/501 and follow until it merges with Hwy 1 North. (Stop in Southern Pines/Aberdeen @ Outback for dinner with AutoX friends, get back on 15/501 N, return home, crash and burn into bed and sleep like you died!)

PS: SC the Tom Tom-they must have oil company stock!

its close enough (95 versus US 1) that me and my wife's NAV systems disagreed. The mini said take 95, the mazda said take US1.

However, my nav didn't even know that US1 was a bypass (I ended up driving about an inch to the left of the road on my nav screen the whole way on US1), so I tend to think that the BMW nav is just overly preferrential to interstates, and that US 1 is significantly quicker. It probably depends on what part of the triangle you are talking about too. If you are in Raleigh, 95 may make a bit more sense than Cary/Apex/Durham/Chapel Hill.

That's the way I've been going for the last few years and I like it. Better than driving through the little town on the way back to 1.

Agreed. This is the route I was speaking of.
