I'm positively certain you've done a lot more riding than me, but since we got the Miata, I've only ridden my bike a few times. The open air, sporty feeling is what does it for me. In the last 3 years I've aired the tires up nearly as many times than the tires have gone around. Of course, the new kid doesn't help the case either.
Just to clarify further, for starters I'm not anti-convertibles for everyone, just me. I'm guessing you got that, but in case others are playing along at home...
To add to that, a sporting bike ride would be more fun for me than a sporting drive in a car. That said, finding the time to get that ride in was more painful than the drive since I prefer less crowded roads for my ride and require putting on more gear. It's also more weather dependent, as I might go for a drive when I may not want to ride. Then add in the kid thing (hey, get a sporting four door and you can easily take them with you!) and there goes the riding time.
The whole topless versus non thing is a different issue to me. I just don't care for the annoyance of the open top when I'm in a car. Too much wind noise, too much chance of things blowing out, etc. When I ride I've got a full face helmet on and earplugs (often with music in them) and it's just a different feeling entirely. Put me in a car and I just don't care to have the top down. Heck, the only time I ride with the windows down is if I'm in town and it's under 80F outside. Get me on the highway and I generally roll 'em up due to noise.
It's strange that I'm that annoyed by wind noise on the road given that I sleep with a "white noise" machine by my bed. *shrug*
Anyway, to each their own on that front. I do enjoy seeing folks enjoying their convertibles on a nice day. It just isn't for me. Even my Jeep has a hard top.
