It is interesting that many of the "better" foreign cars (Toyota, Honda, Mazda, Nissanault) are built in the US and many of the "American" cars are built in Canada or Mexico.

This reminds me of an interesting bit of trivia that I heard at the beginning of the Daytona 500 Sunday, of all the cars that are represented in the NASCRAP field, only one is manufactured in the USA. The Toyota Camry is assembled in Georgetown, Kentucky. Whereas the Ford Fusion is built in Mexico and the Monte Carlo is made in Canada.

So much for poor US build quality, it must really be about the management.

Why would they do something like that? That warranty is nice and all, but you have to attach it to a vehicle that's actually appealing.

Whereas Nissan must be really appealing to the masses these days, or maybe not...

Wait, what?

Who mentioned anything about Nissan? If you're think you're going to hurt my feelings by slamming Nissan, that's not going to happen. I have NO affection for any particular car company. Individual cars, maybe, but not car companies as a whole.

Don't kid yourself. No car maker is perfect. And EVERY car maker CAN'T afford recalls, period. The bottom line is affected. Stock holders are stock holders regardless of what language they speak or where they inhabit the earth.

I certainly agree that there is no perfect car maker, Toyota and Honda inclusive.

Sure, Toyota doesn't want to have recalls, but will do so when necessary. Engine sludge? That sounds like people not changing their oil enough.

I thought recalls were safety related? Is engine sludge a safety problem?

Nah, I just had to throw that in since Nissan isn't exactly making the most appealing cars either. I figured to match the American Big 3 then Nissan had to go in there with Toyota and Honda as the Japanese Big 3.

The slams on American cars don't bother me. I'll just keep on buying my crappy Chevy and Pontiac (and Oldsmobile before they killed them). As a general rule none of the GM cars I have owned have treated me badly.

Recalls aren't just safety related. They are also functional issues. Could be related to a poor quality part or from a design flaw that causes a failure. A rash of bad power window motors, say a bad lot from a vendor, can trigger a selected recall within a VIN range. Major defects could affect a whole years run of a vehicle.

Aaron does make a good point on some of the safety recalls the Big 3 have done. They did it in the face of government actions instead of doing it in good conscience.

A poorly designed engine being blamed for sludge build up I don't consider to be that far fetched. Some people may have gone past the proper change interval or Toyota set one longer than they should have. If 800,000 owners were in on the suit then you can well imagine that there were a lot more who didn't even bother. That many vehicles can't be pawned off on owner negligence to do maintenance. Obviously Toyota wasn't up front about that one. In the face of a class action suit they conceded. So they are not above reproach either.

Another can of worms, but I'd rather have a car with several recalls that address problems, than a car with problems that needed a recall which never happened. You can't qualify a vehicle solely on recall data.
