Don't get me wrong. I like Mazda, even though they've never built a sports car with adequate headroom for me. However, as dumb as you think Ford might be, you have to acknowledge that Mazda would not exist but for a bail-out by Ford in the 1990s, and I doubt they would have been able to launch the Miata in 1989 if Ford hadn't taken a financial interest in the company before that.
If you drive a Miata or an RX-7 or an RX-8 or a Protege or Mazda 3/6 or a Mazdaspeed anything, or a Jaguar, Land Rover or Aston Martin (it could happen), you can thank some crazy executive at Ford who approved funding those companies with the profits from millions of Tauruses, F-150s, Explorers and Mustangs

when he probably should have invested the money in keeping the Taurus (and Mustang and Escort/Focus) up-to-date.
