ok so i have a problem, rather a need. i am about to give up on my second tech guy in three years. i have a small company with sporadic network problems, and i can not seem to find someone who will consistently return my phone calls.

i have a website which hosts my e-mail some f'ing way and i operate off a remote desktop personally. the office has the server and three work stations.

i don't think i am asking much, just a return phone call within 8 hours. long and short of it, anyone want to pick up some side cash and help me out here?

i am tearing down my office as i type in preparation for the move to BF Angier, and i am without Tech Support for the new home office remote setup. any help would be appreciated. thanks, steve

If all you want is someone to answer the phone and/or call you back in a reasonable time frame and you are willing to pay for that I'll volunteer. I can even give the standard Tech Support answer "Is the green light on?" Oh good now reboot it and call me back after it reboots and has been operating for 1 hour so it resets all the internal widgets to the correct form factor"

"Oh you have done that! Good, then are you running rev 1946769437%$#nmrjJYH948b.16 build F of the firmware?"

"What! you don't know". "Then call the manufacturer of the system whose TS office is in Beijing, with a subsidiary phone bank in Bangalore."

"When you get that answer, call back" "Remember, Beijing is 15 hours ahead"

"Do you want to use PayPal to pay for this session?"

hey lookie here i am back on line.

actually that was not my problem. thanks for the PM's and the serious inquiries (Karl) and also the rest of you bastagdes. my first problem was apparently a corrupted e-mail file at the office which would not allow "the boss's" Outlook to operate correctly. i called a tech person refered to me by my phone people and he came out this evening.

it seems this gentleman has an understanding of simple networks such as mine and so i am now starting with my third tech person in 3.5 years. being a small fish in a big pond sucks for independant tech support.

next up is to get my remote desktop fired up from Angier. and then sort out the "svc host" error message i keep getting, which apparently is screwing with my local printer to remote server connection.

what a PITA. carpet is easy, it's fuzzy side up. nothing more, nothing less.

Steve,

If you're looking to get remote access and control of a computer somewhere else, say at your office from home, you need to check out LogMeOn.com.

It's FREE, or at least the stripper version is, but that's really all you need. There's easy work arounds for some of the excluded functions, like no file transfers or printing (at your remote location). You just email the dang file to yourself at a web mail eddress.

It's for sure secure since my wife and all the ITs who she works with use it to access their computers at their corporate office, and from there on to the LAN. You can bet yer arse they're security conscious, and wouldn't touch it if there were holes in it like all of WIlly's crap has.

It's easy to use. It works. It allows for a user on both ends to have 'keyboard / mouse' control simultaneously if wished. Pretty much impossible to screw it up. All you need is a legit eddress and browser access to the INet from anywhere.

If that's not what you're looking for your specific problem above, you and others might find it quite handy for personal use. I know I do. I'm in Thomasville and last night and tonight have been 'logged on' to my Raleigh computer pulling maintenance on it.

While connected you still have regular control of the entire remote computer and access to any other sites online as normally. I just run it in one of the 'tabs' in the Firefox window I'm using, especially when I need to coordinate functions at both ends. Ya'll do use Firefox don't you... ;)

When I'm in Raleigh I can log on to my Mother's computer here to help her out with any problems she's having or programs she doesn't understand, and do maintenance for her to keep it running as smooth as possible

This is an 'honest to gawd' FREE INet service that is amazingly useful, and as I said 'It WORKS!' How many others can you say that about...

Hope this helps, if not you, somebody,

Steve

I use port forwarding on my router and I use terminal services (RDP) to connect to my home from the office.

I am constantly setting up and managing remote networks as well as server administration.

Let me know if I can be of service.

I won't be able to take you on as a client (I have dwindled my side business down to web-development and hosting), but I can at least get you setup in the right direction and find someone locally who may help you out.
