Trying not to turn this into an anti-Apple hijack but...

The Apple Mac ads are insulting. Its not that I am anti Apple or Mac, but I absolutely hate the ads. It I was to talk to the ad agency, I might say you may get more customers with honey vs. vinegar.

Here is a Nintendo Wii vs. PS3 parody of the Apple ads. Not sure if it is a real commercial or not, but it is pretty funny. I would rate it as PG or PG-13 for those of you at work...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uK8CV-mvw5g

I believe my office mate who has a Mac is using the Trend Micro anti-virus on his Mac.

I agree a good part of the adds must be comparing the current Mac OS to Windows 98. I am the same way I used both macs and pcs, espicaly for video and photo editing, and there is nothing I cannot do with Windows XP that I coulnd not do on a mac, and it is just as easy. Before windows XP I would have always defaulted to using Macs for this stuff, but not anymore.

I think you're out of the target demographic :P I'm only half kidding. Would you ever switch from your current platform?

Apple tried honey for years and it got them what, 2% market share?

I'm not a zealot, but I am ready to admit that each platform has it's strong points. That's what these ads are illustrating. And it's working. I think they're at 5% or so today. Dependant on who's counting I'm sure.

Related Graphic Geeking.
Granted that's a little dated, but it makes a point.

Yes, I have worked on a PC. But Apple continues to make strides in my fields that are light years ahead of what's available on the PC (i.e. Aperture and Final Cut Pro Studio come to mind).

Continuing my hijack..

I am not sure what the target demographics are? From watching the commercials I tend to believe they are looking for people who have a low self image and that if they buy a Mac they will somehow be cool. :whoknows: They show the cool, younger and good looking guy as the Mac and the dumpy older guy as Windows. The commercial just doesn't work if you switch the guys around, so it's pretty clear what they are trying to say. In a weird Star Wars kind of twist, it’s not Darth Vader saying “come to the dark side”, but rather some 20 something saying “come to the cool side”. The force is much stronger with me.

Would I switch? Maybe. I tend to build my own PCs, so only having the Apple’s version of a chef choice menu on the hardware side is a bit of an obstacle. I also don’t feel the need to pay the extra money for the styling. Computer hardware for me is a commodity item. I don’t pay extra for stylish toasters or computers. I am more impressed with the OS, so that is where the real value in a Mac would be for me. I am also about 50/50 Windows/Linux now, so the fact that Mac OS is based upon Unix has appeal to me.

Regarding increased market share, I would tend to think that they are offering a better product more and more every day and that IMHO is a major factor. Having ads of any type is going to get people interested and those ads ARE working. Just IMHO not as well as I think they could. I just think they preach to the converted and those who are swayed by the "cool" factor. I am not a fan of Bill Gates, but I think the other day he was quoted as saying that right now Apple could sell a brick and people would buy it because it is made by Apple. I tend to believe that there is some truth to that. Look at iPods. How many iPod buyers actually researched the non-Apple products? Probably their research consisted of which iPod to get! What Mac has going for it is that even if it looses the cool factor, it still is a VERY good system and most everyone that has one is probably very happy with it.

Forgot to mention that I have seen that and it is funny. :D While I don't like the Apple Mac commercials, I will say that in general Apple's marketing is much better than Microsofts. The iPod design and how it is marketed IS working. The design is clean and that video does show how the MS treatment would ruin the effect.

Kudos to Apple for making some excellent applications. I will trust your opinion that they are or may be the best in their field. No offense, but what that shows is that they can select a niche field and have been able to dominate the market. The same can be said for a number of software vendors in many different areas, so Apple is not special in this regard. If you are professionally in a field that Apple dominates, then a Mac is the obvious choice.

I also seems that he apple community seems to take everything that Steve Jobs to say as gosples where the windows community says year right to everything Bill Gates says.

I would probably never switch mainly for some of the same reasons Richard stated, such as I like to build my own pc's and I can get off really cheap when I am able to upgrade the motherboard and processor and keep the rest of the components. Plus I use them are work and really haven no need for a mac.

Personally I like this video...
might have some NSFW audio (cursing)

I've heard rumors that the upcoming iBrick from Apple will be announced at Macworld 2007 and, get this, it uses no batteries! There are plans afoot by Apple radicals to have spontaneous gatherings of iBrick users in various places and, together, building something like a house! How cool is that!

Where's my iBrick? Can I have it engraved?

Simon

What they can show with the iBrick is a bunch of kids at a rave, dancing, with iBricks in their hands. Then the DJ can start to play something very un-hip and everyone can pelt the DJ with their iBricks.

I use a fairly new Dell laptop at work, a 4 year old Dell PC at home and a new Intel based IMAC at home. The Mac is so much easier to use (Once i get used to all the buttons (close/minimize/expand) being opposite and I keep trying to right click the Mac mouse, and it is command not control.... but trying to do stuff (Video/music/webpages/documents/dreamweaver/pshop)etc is so much easier as is adding a printer/scanner/camera anything because it is plug and play.

I still like the commercials they appeal to the audience that will use a Mac. Plus I like John Hodgeman from the Daily Show

you mean like "I Drive"?

Kenwood had the right idea with that "you are never too trashed to turn up the volume" knob on their amps in the 70's. it was like the size of a mason jar lid.
