1001, 1002, 1003, 1004, 1005 ... and a half....

  That's funny.

Every Evo I have ever ridden in felt slow compared to the STi. Each driver I was riding with was doing a poor job of keeping the turbo on the boill and in the sweet spot. The STi is the same way, just feels different since the powa starts lower in the rev range.

Just using a digital stopwatch. And yeah, I forgot to mention, for those who may not know, that it takes 3 gears to hit 60mph. Of course, you can just use 3rd gear and hit 60 in less than 7 seconds.

Also, when I was doing the testing I was shifting at just over 6000rpm (redline is 7000).

The $50,000 EVO that was traded in at Southern States while I was there was horrible below 4000rpm, but if kept above that it was pretty fun. Didn't kick the back end out like the 04 STi does, just rotated into the turn, spun all 4 tires and smoothly drifted through. Very good balance. And once it got up to 4000rpm, it wasn't a long wait to hit rev limit. I wouldn't want to drive it around on the street much, though - just up to VIR & back.

If you want a real answer to this, Donnie can hook up the Datalogger and run his STi on street tires. My guess is that it will come out around 5 seconds or less.

When I ran a datalogger on my Celica in ST form, I was hitting the top of second (over 60 mph with my gearing and extra rpms over stock) in 5.8 seconds, and yet and STi would still own me to 60 mph. - AB

"Tick" you off with the stop watch comment?

KA has skills, hopefully thick skin.

My 14 year old RX-7 finds too much work for me to do. The EVO and STi are on my list of candidates.

Typing error....amended.

By the way, any experience with the STi on track with an EVO ? I've found that an EVO cannot keep pace with the RX-7 at high speed acceleration...say from 50mph+. ...following a high speed corner for example. Moments like that make it harder to give up the old Mazda.

I don't have much to compare with the STi since the couple I've tracked with had drivers still finding their legs.

Folks seem to lean to the EVO as more of a drivers car, but something about the Subaru appeal to me more. I have not figured it out. Could be the displacement edge, slight styling preference or maybe more faith in the Subi reliability. Could be that I drive by the dealer al the time since I live in so close to it. I try not to look as I go by.

You are gonna be hard pressed to find a more reliable motor than the good ole' 4G63 in the EVO. Its the same motor in the DSM's (Talon/Eclipse).

Now the stock EVO clutch is another matter. Especially with constant hard launching.

Im still Mitsubishi Fanboi, I want an EVO BAD!!!

What's nice about the STi, and one of the things that directed me towards it versus the EVO, is the minimal turbo lag. The only drawback associated with that is that the stock turbo is only good for a little over 300whp. So, if you plan to mod and mod with the best bang for the buck the 4G63 is the way to go.

The STi's drivetrain is pretty robust too.

EDIT: I was incorrect...the limits at the ~300whp level start to be the injectors and fuel pump. I think you can get ~350whp out of the turbo if you swap out the injectors and pump.

That's what I was thinking - but I didn't want to volunteer to organize it like you just did.

2.5L of displacement doesnt hurt either.

SERIOUS Mistu/DSM fanboi's grab the 2.4L 4G64 out of a Galant and REALLY start breaking stuff

There is no replacement for displacement.

Strange that you had that take on the EVO verses the STI. I drove both and had the opposite take. I felt that the STI was overall more powerful and more civilized but I thought the EVO was more exciting as the power came on harder and the feedback was better overall. I enjoyed driving the EVO more than the STI.
