I am watching the boxset again. This is some great stuff from Joss Whedon(Buffy the Vampire Slayer, also great) Fox were idiots for dropping this.
Heavily character based, the show really draws you in. A mix of rogues, theives, and innocents pitted against the autocracy of the Alliance, as well as random hoodlums and scalawags, plus the blind brutalism of the Reavers.
Something worth getting for Christmas

I agree, it was a great show. Kathy and Tom Morris (old timers may remember them) turned us on to it. Why didn't it succeed? I have no idea, but on paper a Chinese space western doesn't sound like a winner...

Also supprising was that "Serenity" didn't do so well in the box office either. But, again, a very excellent movie and if you get the Firefly box set you might as well get the movie with it.

Bump for an awesome show...

I really think marketing was the biggest problem with the show. Susan and I are/were huge Buffy fans, but never had a chance to really watch Firefly when it was on.

There are SO many questions still unanswered about the show (who is the Sheppard really?) that I think a Serenity sequal that is a continuation, not a 'recap' of the show, would be better

Kieran and I are great fans. Even for a TV show the effects were of good quality and you could tell that the set designers thought very carefully about the design of the Serenity. I liked that it didn't take itself too seriously (you don't get to laugh much with Battlestar Gallactica). And I think the blend of low-tech and high-tech is great. What other sci-fi show would have an intersteller space ship carrying cattle!?

I watched Firefly when it was first on and was really dissapointed when it was cancelled. I haven't watched Serenity yet, but have the borrowed DVD waiting. I've been on a Battlestar Gallactica kick recently, started watching the season two episodes on the Univeral HD channel this year and got hooked. Just finished up the original mini-series and season one DVDs to get caught up. I personally think Battlestar Gallactica is the best show on television right now, of course I'm a big geek and and am watching the new Doctor Who series as well. :)

Really enjoyed both the show and movie. I am surprised Sc-fi didn't pick up the cast to keep production going

Wow... this is my kinda crowd!
Loved Firefly... I've lost count of how many timess I've watched the DVD's... which i've tranferred to my iPod.
Every character is an asset to the story. And I just love a good guy character that does the "bad" things... ie killing the bad guy before he gets a shot.
For those who want to watch the movie before the series... you won't be lost. Whedon does a great job of introducing the characters in the first 10 mins.

Galactica is awesome. After I borrowed the MINI-series from a friend, I was hooked and spent an entire weekend watching the 1st and 2nd series.

The new Doctor Who is fun as well. It such a great vehicle for storytelling... go anywhere... visit anytime... aliens, parallel universi, Special effects can be hokey, but it fits the genre. The stories are so varied that it stays fresh.

Anybody, into Heroes?

I'm trying to stay in there, but it is soooo sloooow that I get bored.

Anyway, glad there are other geeks out there.

Both Cathy and I are into Heros. I am concerned that they will drag things out forever to keep the series going. I always find that if it a single story line it is much better to have a set number of episodes. Thats why show like 24 work so well.

I'll second the Firefly/Serenity endorsements. And the BSG nod.

Galactica is the first sci-fi show in a long time that actually takes a shot at doing what good sci-fi is suppose to do. Make you think.

I don't suspect there is a better-written or more out-front controversial show on TV. They've used sci-fi to frame the most frightening analogy to current events ever depicted on TV. They've hit on: Abortion. Un-checked military power. Religion. Parental rights. Class warfare. Suicide Bombing.

Firefly was similar, but Fox didn't have the nerve to let it run its course.

I couldn't agree more. It's a first rate drama with Sci-fi as the backdrop.
I can't remember a Sci-fi show where the technology wasn't a main character.

I plan to give BSG a go, but I want to start from the begining. I would like to Watch Dr. Who(I was a huge fan back in the Tom Baker days, I even had a scratch built TARDIS) but I cannot seem to get the times right.

I will also give props to FarScape. The first couple of episodes were a little slow, but that show was my main reason for keeping cable. To bad it is gone as well.

And while I am shilling deceased programming, The Adventures of Brico County Jr. (featuring Bruce Cambell) is out on DVD. I am waiting for a price drop, so far it is around $80, a little rich for my blood.

I had never heard of Firefly before we rented the movie Serenity. After watching the movie, I rented the TV Series. Good stuff, I just wish they hadn't left the series open like it was.

I ditched cable a long time ago. Now I just rent TV Series from Netflix.

Recommendation for anyone seeking out TV series programming: tvtorrents.com and an HTPC. Wonderful things. I'll also give a thumbs up for Windows Media Center, it's slick. We have gone through 5 season of 24, 3 seasons of Lost, and finishing up 3 seasons of The 4400. Firefly, Prison Break, and the first few season of Sopranos are already on the HDD for when we need a break from the other series. I think I'll pick up BSG and Heroes based on this thread for future watching.
