OK instead of a music thread (which I'm sure someone will start) how about a book thread for the literate amongst us. I have a couple of other reasons for starting this is that I am having trouble finding good audiobooks to listen to in the car.

Here are my recommendations lately

A Dirty Job - Christopher Moore
The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night - Mark Haddon
The Kite Runners - Khalid Hosssenni
Assassination Vacation - Sara Vowell
The River of Doubt - Candace Miller
Marley and Me - John Grogan

Any other suggestions/favorites

I mentioned it in the movie thread, Dashiel Hammets, Red Harvest. I like all his books but this is the best. Elmore Leonard is enjoyable as well.
My favorite Scifi guy is Robert Heinlein, with Friday topping the list. Red Planet is the first book I remember buying.
The Harry Potter books are very good as well. The first is a little simple, but as the characters get older with each book, the books get much more complex.
Right now I am reading The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier and Clay(Michael Chabon). This book has been great. A++

Not a book, but.

MAKE magazine. This magazine is the stuff. If you like to tinker and make gadgets, both practical and art this is the magazine for you. It comes out quarterly. They have a project section. In the past it has had home wind turbines and waterbottle rockets. This month is a rubberband powered ornithopter, and an alarm clock you switch off using a light gun.

He's my favorite Scifi guy also. Friday was good. I liked these best;

Stranger in a Strange Land
I Will Fear No Evil

I have very little time for reading fiction usually, but we do listen to audiobooks when traveling. Our tendency is towards mysteries, adventure, and science fiction, pretty much in that order, also a good comedy when we can find one.
Some authors we favor: James Patterson, Clive Cussler, John Grisham.
We rent from Cracker Barrel on the road, but their selection tends to be stale, so we buy one or two as well for long trips.
Maybe we should start a book exchange thread? We have a stack we'll never listen to again we'd be interested in trading rather than sticking on ebay.

That sounds like a good idea, Chuck. We've done the same thing with Cracker Barrell and enjoyed it, but their selection is limited.

However, we've got some good audio books that we could offer up for exchange, including:
  • Da Vinci Code - Dan Brown (unabridged)
  • A Short History of Nearly Everything - Bill Bryson (non-fiction, unabridged)
  • Jarhead - Anthony Swofford
  • Odd Thomas - Dean Koontz
And more, I think, but am not coming up with the names right now.

In fact, we're leaving for a week-long road trip on Monday, and we'd love to pick up an audio selection or 2 before we go. Does anyone have anything to exchange that they could bring to Sanford on Sunday?

Thanks!

Carl, I would be interested in Jarhead. I unfortunately only have audiobooks from iTunes, so I cannot share/trade them.

Books? Huh? Is this what people learned from before TV?

Don't read all that much (time), but I'm currently working on "Ghost Rider" by Neil Peart.

The wife is a voracious reader. She could read a book a day. She read Marley and Me in a weekend. 2 thumbs up from her.

I am currently reading Auschwitz. It is not a light and fluffy read. Very disturbing historical look at Auschwitz and how and 'whys' it came to be. Great book, but very disturbing.

For the car nut that doesn't have time or doesn't read books...the B.S. Levy series is sure to get you a little interested in reading (since it is about cars and racing):

My next read will be grad school entrance exam materials...

If you can convert them to MP3 or something a non-iTunes person can play, that's good enough for me. I've heard this conversion is straightforward to do, but my info is secondhand.

Assuming you can do that, PM me with what you've got. Thanks!

Title: Competition Car Aerodynamics: A Practical Handbook
Author: Simon McBeath

Fairly technical but interesting read. Good examples of applying CFD. Covers all kinds of cars and impacts of different aero devices. I see a big wing and splitter in my future
