There are several folks in and around my office that are knocked up.......er pregnant and the CR car seat tests were a big topic of discussion. There are like two infant seats that passed the tests.

What burns me is that it is one thing to have something that is not life threatening not work as described, but safety equipment is another thing. Any company that markets something safety related and that is proven to fail ought to be driven out of business and its officers held personally liable for damages. No Enron golden chutes.

And we wonder why James Sokolov exists.........

I went to double check the install of my seat for our new arrival and the FD told me that it was unsafe due to the fact that it was more than 5 years old. When he held the base up to the bright light outside, you could see where it had started to breakdown and the light was beginning to show through.

Ironically we had seen the report on the news. I did some quick research and bought the Graco Snugride with EPS, one of the two that passed. The EPS system is new and has some added foam that will provide some added protection.

With a lot of us either with new babies or ones on the way, I encourage you to check the date of manufacture of the seat you are going to use and if necessary buy a newer one.

It makes me think about the folks that buy these things at yardsales. We are going to cut the harnesses on our old one and scrap it.

I found it interesting that the same company that makes seats for Europe and the US has 2 models. The lower quality one for the US market (which fails) due to our lower standards. But their higher quality one for the European market passes. It's a shame they don't offer the good version here as the Deluxe model or something. I'm sure there is a market for it.

It's sad that those models exist but you can't buy them here. Maybe all you folks with infants could get together and get a group buy on the European version that really works...

Or better yet a group test drive of the seats in Europe at the Nurburgring, Hockenheimring, Silverstone......I could tour guide I know the way

If it is in the interet of the safety of my children, sign me up for those, uh, lapping sessions.

Duct tape is the solution for better child restraint as well as for inexpensive daycare/babysitting.

Consumer Reports retracts infant car seat study. They should stick to appliances.

That of course is why they like Camrys. For many years you could tell exactly what they'd say about a car because their criteria were solely based on "Is it a Camry?" At least they eventually got over their "Is it made abroad?" kick too.

Their reviews were reasonably useful, though, if you read their facts and ignored their conclusions. I had noticed them getting consistently more open-minded in recent years, although I haven't read them recently.
