Does anyone know of any organizations or clubs related to motorsports in Durham in which middle school kids are involved? For example, is there a racing school or a motorsports club for kids? I’m trying to find out if any kids in Durham get involved in motorsports in any way.

This question came to me at work today from a TV producer putting together some Durham-based programming. Because of my line of work, I am restricted to Durham-based organizations only, please.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Thanks!!!

I'm not aware of much, however it's worth mentioning that Southern High School in Durham does participate in the EV CHallenge.

There *is* a motorsport component to that.

I've seen kids karting in competition on Triangle Access TV channel - I think it was at Orange Co. Speedway, so there must be something!

I believe Marvin is right. Charles Wolthusen and I went to Orange County Speedway years ago and saw kart races. I believe there were two age brackets for the kids and they were running Briggs 5 Hp kart. I think the kids were running box stock engines. I guess they are still doing something.

Yes I voted against you joining the club.

I think they closed the Orange County karting speedway. I've only been down in NC for about 2 years and haven't seen anything going on there. I live in Hillsborough and travel to Roxboro a bit through that way. They did sell and reopen the Orange Co. Speedway right next door this season. Maybe someone will get the karts running again. I have a 4 year old who would love to get into it!

I was by there in June on a Saturday night and they were running races at both tracks. The kart track looks pretty abandoned if you drive by it during the day but that Saturday night they had the lights blazing and there were quite a few cars and pickup trucks on the far side of the track with karts circling around. There was no one in the stands near the road and none of the buildings near the road appeared to be used. It may just be a matter of tracking down which group or club is using the track.
