We've been having a lot of stations cut out lately (particularly the lower numbers, 2-30, sometimes in the digital tier as well). Anyone else having issues, or is it just a flaky box?

Ironically, it's not an issue with the HD stations (which seem to be more sensitive to box/network problems).

I have Durham TWC and haven't had any problems lately. About a 18 months or so ago I was losing some of the lower channels... (2(NBC) most of the time). They ended up coming out and installing a small amp in my house. No problems since.

Hmmm, I should check to see if my amp is still plugged in....

I had those problems with my digital cable here in Raleigh on 2,3, Espn, and some others I don't watch. As soon as Speed starting getting scrambled I made the call.

It was just a connection problem up on the telephone pole. The tech said it was pretty common especially with channels 2 & 3. He did mention that in order to fix mine, he took out my 87 year old neighbor's cable as a short term remedy. I saw his truck there the next day too btw...

What a wonderful evening to go into the attic :)

I checked my amp. It wasn't hooked up (TWC unhooked it last time they claimed my box wasn't the problem).

I decided to reconnect it, only to find that several of the connections on the 3 way splitter were quite loose.

I we'll see if tight connections fix things.

Thanks for the tips!

HD equipment for 8 bucks a month. TWC is far from perfect, but I like my HD.

I am sure Dustin knows this, but for others watching the parade of "DirecTV dittos".... DirecTV does HD as well. I had an HD Tivo via DirecTV. And like TWC, DirecTV is far from perfect. However, I prefer DirecTV over cable.

Let's see.. my HD receiver with TiVo cost me $100 after rebates through Directv. At $8 a month, you pay the nearly same thing in a year of use, yet I own my equipment.

In Charlotte, we have local HD channels on Directv. No over the air channels anymore. Let me know how cable is working during football season ;) - AB

TWC had HD DVR's out for a year (or more?) than the DirecTV DVR's.

When we got our HDTV we switched from satellite to cable to save a few bucks. At the time we would have needed to upgrade our dish, and our receiver at significant expense. After all that, I'd also need to have the local stations tuned in via the OTA antenna, and I *still* wouldn't have had any programming in any other rooms of the house (with cable, I get all the "analog" channels in any room for NO extra expense).

If I were starting from scratch today it might be different, but at the time, TWC actually had some value to offer. Especially since it appears that DirecTV is now going to offer the major networks in HD.

We're already on our 3rd DVR (one was a direct replacement, the 3rd an actual upgrade), and I haven't paid a dime for those changes.

Actually Scott, I "think" that DirecTV/Tivo had their HD DVR out first. Early/Mid 2004 with the TWC showing up very shortly after. The Tivo model has always been considered to be the best one available. However, when it first showed up it was VERY expensive. And that is why many went with the TWC model. Price has some down quite a bit recently (which is why I got mine about a year ago), but that same model that came out in 2004 is eventually going to have to be replaced due to technical issues that would take up lots of space to explain. Details on that swap has not been released, but most likely it will be free or with little cost to me.

Not to start a cable vs. sat thread, I understand your decision. I am puzzled about the cost to upgrade via DirecTV as usually that cost little to nothing if you are an established customer. I already had my house wired for sat and have had receivers since 1995, so I already have had the equipment and many free upgrades from DirecTV so a switch to cable for me personally just doesn't make any sense. I actually don't have the HD package from DirecTV as I am waiting for more content. But I use a small internal antenna with my HD Tivo and that gets all of the major networks stuff just fine. When DirecTV starts offering HD locals in this area and supports the next gen HD DVR, I may consider upgrading.

We had problems with heavy snow in the low# channels durring the Stanley cup finals. Then RR went out. The repair guy came out and replaced the splice connector on the utility pole, said that it was > 30 years old from when the cable was first run on the street. Cleared everything right up... the day AFTER the final playoff game.

Oh yeah, we've not had any problems since I tightened everything. My guess is that it was loose connectors in our case, not the amp or lack of amp.
