I've backpacked/climbed/mountain biked/kayaked/ran over the years. Never been elite in any of them but I'm not sucky either. Mountain biking and kayaking feel _very_ similar to autocross, particularly in the way that you have to stop thinking about your next move to do it right. (flow, ya know!)

Speaking of this, anyone want to ride or trail run in the area?

Kevin - I would be up for some biking. Used to ride all the time in Michigan, but I haven't been much in the last few years except some exploration rides around all the construction sites in my new neighborhood. So I will be pretty slow :)

Know any good places? Want to set up a time/place? My mext few weekends are pretty free. Cold weather biking is fun.

Maybe time to start a new thread?

Whitney - I don't know if youre going to the autox this sunday, but if youre not you should go to new light! They are open on sundays only for the winter, and are some of the best trails in the area.

I was planning on doing a ride up there starting sunday around 10am or so...

What / where is new light? I'd be up for a ride this Sunday at 10. You definitely going? Who else are you riding with?

I would need to seriously dust off my helmet :)

I'm up for it, particularly if it's relatively dry. New Light gets too damn gunky for my taste when it's wet, and I _like_ getting all dirty. If it's really wet I'd like to try the trails at Harris, as I've heard that they dry out very quickly.

Mike, New Light is on the N side of Falls Lake a few miles past 98 on New Light Road. Here's a link to a map and description:

Sunday
Mostly sunny. Lows in the lower 40s. Highs in the upper 60s.

It's on. Can we do it at 10:30 or so instead of 10?

I'm going to start working on the bike tonight. You guys will wait up for me, right? I'm going to be a little rusty! ;)

Who else wants to come out? Maybe we should start another thread...

Mike - I've been getting back into this as well and even though I've been 10 times or so over the last couple of months I'm still rusty ;)

10:30 Sunday at New Light, I'm in!

I'm assuming this is mountian biking, what about us roadies :( .

I've got a Lemond Zurich, it can't offroad at all.

Hey, I'm not far from New Light... but I think I'm busy that day. There is a very challenging trail behind the lake crabtree park. I can't remember the name of the road to get there, but if you go into the park and ride their bike trails, you can get to it that way. It's about a 5 mile loop of some very fast, challenging terrain with big hills.

I've also ridden around the NCSU campus, lots of steps and other concrete obstacles to break your neck on.

BTW, am I the only one here still riding a completely rigid bike? Let me know when you guys go again, I'll actually try get on my bike (after I find it) in the mean time to harden my seat again!

^The trails behind crabtree park are knows as "rocky road" to the local MTB'ers.

I'd be up for a ride sometime in the triangle area. If you folks have never been to the Chapel Hill high school trials, you're missing out on some insane technical fun. I think I'll be getting a road bike soon as well to offset my collection of mountain, BMX, and trials bikes, so watch out roadies!

I realize that most people on this board are very technically incllined, but if any of you have any bike-specific questions, I have about 3 years experience as a bike mechanic at a defunct local shop, and at the new Durham REI.

I know of several people into cars now who worked in a bike shop. I did from when I was 14 to 17 years old. I went looking for a job when I was 14, and the shop wanted to hire me, but they weren't sure if they could hire a 14 year old! Karl S worked in a bike shop for a few years too.

Re - the trails. After riding New Light, I understand why everyone rides suspended bikes. Mine is "completely rigid" as Phil calls it :) My preference is for hard-packed fast trails - so your description of the Chapel Hill trails worries me. Any non-rocky trails around here?

Have you tried Mt Syanide (sp?) near Duke Forrest?

Saturday? I'll be in town. Maybe Crabtree park, as it would be much friendlier to non-suspended people than most of the other areas around here.
