So is anyone planning to go to the Gun Show on May 5th or 6th? I was thinking about going on Sunday the 6th.

http://www.dixiegunandknifeshow.com/raleigh.html

On a related note, anyone have suggestions about the best way to SELL a few handguns? I have a few I want to trade in on a different model.

Nice shooting btw Wes.

All he did was buy a paper target and use a pencil on it!!! That's not nice shooting, it's abstract art!

I still need some practice -- this is at 20 yards. Not bad, but definitely nothing to brag about.

Were you running when you shot this target? Just kidding!!!

We’re finally on a topic in which I can talk about! First and foremost, if anyone needs a trigger lock, I’ve got several of the cable kind that I can bring to the next auto-cross, for free even.

Here’s my experience, and it’s not from reading magazines (which are typically full of BS). I typically shot over 500 rounds a month (not including military related shooting) while serving in the Marine Corps and also worked on the shooting range when possible. I’ve been shooting since about 12 and have probably shot ten times more weapons than Whitney has driven cars. I’ve also taught basic marksmanship, but that’s been a while.

Bullets: Here’s a simple explanation anyone can follow.
- 45 = knock anything down, they’re not getting back up… ever.
- 40 = knock most anything down, they’re not getting back up.
- 9mm = knock most things down, but when they get back up, shoot em again with all that extra ammo.
- < 9mm = You’re pissing me off and I’m going to beat you with that weapon when I get to you.

Purpose: If you’re just into sending lead into a target and worried about the cost, then go buy a 22 or a bb gun, same end result either way. Keep in mind that a “target” pistol is just that and no more.

Safety: Some folks aren’t comfortable with a safety like what Glock has or with a weapon that has no mechanical safety like a Sig Sauer 229 while some folks prefer not having one since it could wind up as a failure point. Let me assure you that you are no safer with a mechanical safety like on my 1911-frame 45 than you are with one. When it comes down to it, the trigger must be pulled (I’m ignoring cheap guns here!), otherwise it’s not going off unless the weapon is broke or has a defect. Keep in mind a revolver doesn’t have a safety. Don’t get me started on an accidental-discharge, there is no such thing.

Glock: Out of the box, it’s THE most dependable handgun in it’s price range, and it’s damn accurate if you can get the hang of it. Its balance is much different than other weapons and can be tough to master. I personally don’t shoot them as well as other handguns, but I’ve only shot about 500 rounds through them. This company stands behind their product and I will have one some day.

H&K: Another outstanding German gun, but I don’t think the accuracy is on par with other similar priced guns, especially the 1911-frames. Much like the Glock, it’s a very dependable gun straight from the factory and the company goes out of their way to take care of customers. These guns are HUGE! Their carry model is bigger than some full-frame’s!

Sig Sauer: Prior to getting bought, they made an outstanding weapon, better than either the Glock or H&K. However, since the original company was sold, they’ve taken cost cutting measures and IMO, don’t produce nearly the same quality weapon. I will say that prior to being sold, I thought they were under-priced for what you got. It’s still an outstanding gun, just not the deal they once were. They’re dead accurate out of the box though.

Colt: I have experience with government models and the Gold Cup model. I don’t like the Gov model as it’s very clunky, but the one’s I shot have had more rounds through them than my civic has miles. The gold cup was awesome, but I don’t know how it would hold up if it were to get banged around, like a carry-pistol may get.

Springfield: I purchased an Operator TRP last year and have put between 8,000 and 10,000 rounds through it. I’ve had no misfires, but I clean it every 500 rounds religiously. I’ve done different shooting courses with the gun and it’s been banged a few times and never missed a beat. It’s a bit big for concealed carry as it’s a 1911-frame, but not exactly made to be hidden. It’s very accurate and obviously dependable. I’ve also shot the 40 XD and was impressed with the 50 or so shots. I wish I could shoot this and the Glock side by side because my initial feeling was that the XD was easier to shoot than the Glock.

Anyway, sorry for the book, but you guys brought up something other than cars that I enjoy. If I can help out in any way, let me know.

I'm of the mindset that for personal protection, you want a heavier slower expanding round. The .40 165 grain Hydra-Shok round works well from what I've researched. I'd rather have all of the force get dissipated into the target's mass rather than have it punch a big hole all the way through.

For target shooting, Semi-Wad Cutters make pretty holes in the paper. 8) However, they're prone to about a 1% jam rate in the throat due to the square nose.

For about 2 years or so, I used to shoot ~500 rounds/wk. I was thinking of engaging in Bulls Eye competition until they shut down the old range that was on Hiwy 70 (where the bike shops are?)

M1991A1 Colt Commander .45 - not too big a carry gun, but long distance accuracy/repeatability is compromised due to the shorter barrel. Having a 7 round magazine, it fits well in smaller hands.

Browning Buckmark .22 - This was a sweet shooter right out of the box. You can't ask for cheaper shooting.

Whitney's right on with his S&W .22. It's the only .22 I ever shot that I liked better than my Browning.

The most impressive revolver I ever shot was a Dan Wesson .357 (Kit w/different length barrels=$$$). With the 8" barrel, the rounds went exactly where you pointed 'em. I still want one, just not bad enough.

Full frame 1911 Colt .45's rock (lterally). I still want a well smithed unit. Again, just not bad enough. Cars are still more fun.

My dad has 40+ guns. He has a Dan Wesson .44 Stainless Steel with a swappable barrel. I think he has 6" and 9" barrel. I fired it a couple of times. Better lock out your elbows, or you'll end up with it splitting your nose open, like his friend did when he tried to fire it at the range. - AB

My step-dad has a 410 pistol he built himself  I've never fired it, but those that did were not eager to do so again anytime soon. :) It was a very simple device that would dismantle into two or three very innocuous looking pieces. No fancy smansy rubber grip with that puppy, all metal.
