Good points, Bret. I forgot to mention it in my already too-long post above, but in both cases when I bought a car out-of-state, before buying the cars I contacted my insurance agent to set up coverage. The insurance agency just needed the cars' VIN, and they scheduled the coverage to start the day I was scheduled to pick each car up. I definitely wouldn't consider driving a car home, especially over a long distance and/or on unfamiliar roads, without insurance coverage.

If you are financing it, you need insurance on it any ways. But that is a good point.

The easiest airport security I have encountered was flying to Miami to get my R package. Show up for the 6:15 morning flight in flip-flops, shorts, one-way ticket, small bag with one change of clothes, xm radio and license plate. I breezed right through...the TSA person asked if I was picking up a car...I said yes and I was through with not a hassle. Not one of my business trips has been that easy!

As far as using the previous owner's tag ask Bill McCanless about that.

The people who bought his Chevette kept the tag and did not feel the need to register of insure the car.

As long as you have set up insurance I think NC DMV allows you to transfer your tag and notify them within some short period. I will ask my neighbor who has worked for DMV for 25 years. I think she should have the right answer on that.
