There are few problems that can't be solved with the proper application of explosives.

At the price of gas these days, wasp spray may be cheaper. Plus it doesn't kill the adjacent grass or shrubs . . . or burn eyebrows.

I dealt with Yellow Jackets in the back yard with a pint of gas and a match. Pour the gas down the hole late in the day when they're mostly all present, get back 8 ft or so and ignite(a piece of cardboard on the end of a long stick is pretty safe). Problem solved.

Be careful of the gas fumes. It's amazing how far they can spread out along the ground.

hey ya'll watch this

I had a yellow jacket problem a couple of years ago. Found them while trimming the hedges in front of the house. Swatting at the first two to sting me turned out to be a bad idea, as apparently squashed yellow jackets give off a pherome that tells the rest of the nest to go crazy.

Anyway, Terminix wanted no part of the job, and referred me to Fuller Pest Mgmt Services, 596-9777 in Durham. It took him a couple of tries to finish them off, but he only charged for the first visit. It was less than $100.

We poked around out there today and couldn't find any signs of a live nest. I'm going to continue to keep a watch out for them before trying to mow that area again.

I have found several nests the hard way, stung more than thirty times so far, twenty times in one shot. I use a pint of gas, lit with a carb cleaner flame thrower. The carb cleaner will also take out any strays, you don't even need to light it up. I like gas because the vapor will flow thru the whole nest and take the whole thing out. Usually when I do it, I see flame spout out of the ground in several places. You might want to have a garden hose handy.

My father was a roofer, and often had to deal with stinging nasties on the jobs. He carried a squirt oil can (the metal ones with a pump lever on the side) filled with gasoline as part of his work tools. Those cans can squirt a stream of gas 15' or more and can give great pleasure as you Dirty Harry their butts. There is no reason to light the gas, unless you just enjoy the smell of burning bugs in the morning, the fumes alone will kill the little buggers, and unlike some commercial sprays they will drop out of the sky immediately and die within a few moments preventing any retalitory strikes. Unlit gas in the open will evaporate quickly leaving little to no collateral damage.
I also use gas to "discourage" moles and voles as well. Pour about a cup or two down their hole and seal it up with a stomp or some dirt. The heavier than air fumes will travel down the burrow and put them "to sleep" where they lay.

Anyone know of any guidelines with respect to how much Gasoline you have to pour on your yard before you run into problems with MTBE contamination? Just curious.

According to the EPA and NCDENR, ONE drop of fuel or other contaminants coming in contact with the earth, is an environmentally damaging spill. At the airport, if we have any fuel leave the ramp, either by storm drain or into the surrounding dirt, we have to report it to the appropriate agencies.

Nope. If I did I probably would care about moles and voles. Lawns only concern city folk.
Besides why would anyone worry about a cup of gas once a year getting in their well when their septic field is only a hundred feet away 24-7???

Glad your not my neighbor Chuck. I also hear that DDT is great at controlling insects as well. Mix the DDT and Gas in a single container and spray around your yard. You should be able to get the Moles, Voles, Yellow Jackets and Mosquitos all at once. Might kill a few people a few years from now as well, but thats someone elses problem.

I guess you need to weigh the risks versus benefits, we don't live in a perfect world. My opinion is that there is a far greater real risk to people from the bite of fire ants or sting of wasps and hornets than the likelyhood of harming anyone by pouring a cup of gasoline in the ground. After all where did that gasoline come from in the first place? According to the archeologists, animals and now man have survived pretty sucessfully in the area surrounding the La Brea tar pits for eons.
I don't see you driving a hybrid or electric vehicle or even a bicycle at the AXs for being such a tree hugger... shouldn't preach what you don't practice.

I disagree Chuck. When a cup of gasoline is poured into the ground, it eventually makes its way to an underground stream. A primary source of drinking water for many Americans. If everyone in the country poured even just one cup of gas, oil, or non-biodegradeble pesticide on the ground, we wouldn't have ANY fresh drinking water.

Yes, I work for a company that provides fuel for aircraft and I drive 2 cars that aren't very fuel efficient, but I stall make damn sure when I change my oil, that I don't spill even a drop on the ground. I also make damn sure it goes to a recycling facility and not the county land fill.

Unfortunately it was this kind of thinking that caused the environmental disaster that is the Love Canal.
