That is a good find. And if you blow up the rotary, the car can only get better.

Cosby beat me to it Adam. $3500 will go a long way on the Z. and unless you plan on running TT, the need for modification is nil. you can run as is in HPDE. i am considering bringing mine out for Roebling in June.

So far I wouldn't say exactly nil. But not far off. It is track ready out of the box but a couple of things are helpful. Those would push the car out of SS into ASP which I don't think Adam wants to do. An oil cooler and brake duct extensions go a long way. But all that is about $600. Then decide on race pads and r-comp tires or not. I opted not. Race tires and pads in the sizes that car uses will eat your wallet. That's why I opted not to use them, yet...

Bring your Z out to Roebling. Easy track to learn, runoff room is pretty good, not bad on brakes. You can run the whole track in 4th in a Z easily.

As far as the cost of the car, planting it in a wall, writing it off, can't run 10/10ths. Sure that is a good point. If you're just learning track you shouldn't be driving 10/10ths anyway. Just because you buy a disposable car, that doesn't mean your body is...

If I were getting into TT or wanted to do D2D I would start over with a dedicated car.

If it wasn't made by Datsun/Nissan and doesn't conform to 2X0, it ain't a Z.

BTW, this would not be my first track experience. I have done a few car guys schools and some lapping days up at Summit Point. So, I am not a complete rookie on track.

I need lots of seat time... because in 14 months I am running One Lap of America and need to be fully ready to tackle that beast. :) So, having a car I can run 10/10ths during the next year is a definate goal. I will get some seat time in the M3 we are running in OLoA, but I think having my own track car would allow me to get even more seat time.

What kind of M3? If it is an E36, then see if you can find an early e36 325i. The two should be close enough that a lot of the car-specific nuances would transfer. Not sure if it can be done for $3000 without it being a complete shitbox, but that would be the most logical choice. I think a 318i, although the same chassis, would be far enough away in power and have a different enough balance that the differences would be great enough to not warrant doing it.

its going to be a highly modified e46 M3. I don't think anything I can buy in my budget will compare to the OLoA car. :)

Here is the parts list that was just ordered today for the M3:

Moton Club Sport Dampers
Eibach ERS Springs
Adjustable Camber/Castor Race Plates
3 Series Rear Shock Mounts - Spherical Bearing Race (Moton CS)
Ground Control E36/E46 Prepared-Legal Adjustable Rear Lower Control Arm
Ground Control Slide Adjustable Swaybars E46, M3 style mount; Front and Rear
Powerflex E46 3 Series/Z4 Control Arm Bushing (Except Xi) 60mm
Powerflex E36/E46/Z4 Trailing Arm Toe Bushing
E46 M3 Lightweight Clutch/Flywheel Street Kit Ceramic
Rogue Engineering Octane SSK - E46 -- E46 M3 w/CNC Carrier
Larini E46 M3 GT Sport Cats
Jet-Hot E46 M3 Headers
Custom Roll Cage

On top of that we will be adding some more power to the car and ditching some of its weight.

I agree with Wes, calling a modern day vette a Z is an insult to the vette. (And I'm a fan of the old Z-cars)

I've seen and driven a $3000 E36 325, I even lived to talk about it afterward.

See, bringing that up, is just wrong. Everyone prepare, Les is working on a dissertation.

Especially since some of us know that Les wouldn't feel "comfortable" in a Sherman tank on a race track. :P
