 Post subject: Need a shop that turns the rotors on the car

Can anyone suggest a Raleigh shop that has the brake lathe that turns the rotors while their still on the car?

After a VERY high quote for 4 new rotors on the wife's car (unnecessary IMHO), I'll take a calculated risk and turn them.

Again I'm showing my ignorance, but what's the premise behind turning them "on the car"? Do they perform better than they would if they are turned "off the car"? :roll:

Around here (Wilson) I can get a pair turned for $15 "off the car". Not sure of the "on the car" price, or if anyone in this area even does it.

Reasoning - Laziness, budget, and marital bliss

My wife has a Jetta 1.8t, and that generation of VW's REQUIRE the use of this stupid special tool to back off the piston to allow you to reinstall the caliper. They couldn't use a simple adjustment screw like everyone else.

So...the combination of not having the special tool, not wanting to buy it either, and that my wife strongly dislikes me working on her car anyway leads me to my odd request.

Southern States VW clearly stated their policy to me this morning - they do not turn VW rotors, period. The lady said that was not recommended by VWoA. I understand why they say this - liability.

Well...on a 2001 Jetta with 48K of mostly of highway driving, I don't think I'm anywhere near the rotor wear to necessitate the new rotors that Sou. St. suggested.

Chances are if I take the car to an independent shop, they won't have the right service tool either, and they'll hack the heck out of the brakes trying to get the rotor off/on. If I can find a shop with the "on the car" lathe, I can avoid much hassle and the potential of some mechanic I don't trust hacking away at my wife's car.

If you are not changing the pads, then the caliper should pop right back on the same way it cam off. You should only need to retract teh caliper piston with new pads.

To make things even easier, the rotors will be thinner when they go back on...

Put it on jack stands, and take those rotors to the shop!

It's all null since the stupid tool is for the rears only, and the fronts are the ones in question. I love misinformation.

So...I'll pull them off and take them to CarQuest when I have time...

Well when you do get to the rears I'll bet Adam Ligon has that tool. :wink:

On a related "special tool" note I made two trips into town last weekend because I didn't know an oil pressure switch had it's own "special" socket. Who the hell thought of that brilliant idea I'll never know. A plain hex socket was just too simple for those engineers I guess.
