Hey Emmett,
I just now saw this note! A day late! I used to race catamarans in high school and college. I've had time on Hobie 14, 16, 18, and Nacra 5.2 sailboats. I also have gotten to spend some time on a Hobie Trifoiler. Yes, they really will reach 40 plus mph in a 25 mph wind. That thing would blow by catamarans like catamarans blow by monohulls. Amazing!
The Nacra was an awesome boat. We used to call them "flying eggshells". Nothing I've ever sailed was as well balanced, fast and fun. But, they were a bit fragile. My last boat was a a Hobie 18 Magnum with the wings. Now that was indeed a fun boat too. Hull flying while on the trapeze with your feet braced on the wings is a real thrill, especially on a beam reach when you're about to bury the bow and pitch pole the whole thing. (for those of you that don't know that word- it's when you flip a catamaran end over end because you drove the bow so far under water taht the front end of the boat stops and the back keeps going right over the top of you.)
If you actually went sailing the other day, I'm sure you found that the water was freezing. I used to begin sailing in March, but back then I had a wetsuit too. I never could keep my wet hands warm though.
Yes, I actually gave up sailing across the cool blue water to spend summer days standing on 120 degree asphalt. What was I thinking anyway?
