Uhaul will also install a hitch to your car/suv Rob. a 4 banger ought to be able to tow the Miata. actually, hook a tow bar to Graham's Z

I technically could tow it behind my Ranger, but I would be afraid to. I towed a trailer with 2 yds of mulch (and 1 more yd in the bed) and I could feel the transmission slipping

This may not be a feasible option until I get a more travelable car

Ryan, try driving your chick car 12 hours and then being alert and wanting to drive around a 4 mile track. It is only for the young, (Oh wait that is you  ) I am too old to want to do that
:(

Ok, you do realize that if you had a true 3 cy of mulch in your truck that was about 6,000 lbs. I doubt a trailer + Miata would get close to that.

Uh, no if I did I probably would not have towed it  It probably was close, since it was dropped in by a John Deere Front Loader and priced by the yard....... Hmmmmmmm rethinking options now.....

VIR's 3.27 mile track is just a wee bit closer Rob. You might consider that option.

i have had two yds on a Sierra 1500 and it was overloaded. i agree with Ryan, you might find pulling the Miata less weight. but Sebring is a long ass ride from here.

As the owner of an Explorer with the same transmission as the Ranger I can atest to the weakness of the Ford transmission. The fine folks at Cottman Transmission can also testify to the wonderful weakness of the Ford transmission in the Ranger. It keeps them in boat payments.
The transmission is just not made to tow and God forbid that you should forget to lock out the over-drive while towing...sudden death since the final drive assembly of the over-drive unit is a very weak bunch of stamped steel parts. The owners manual warns against using over-drive while towing, but they don't explain it quite as well as the repairman.

Triangle RentACar has Ford E150 Econoline cargo vans with hitches on them. I used one last month to pull my trailer and BMW to VIR. My E250 was in the shop after being rear ended.

The hitch had a 5000 lbs. capacity and 7 pin brake light connector. It did not have a brake controller so the trailer brakes did not work. It pulled find. I was careful with the brakes but the van brakes stopped the trailer without any problem.

They would not quarantee that it would have a hitch but all the ones I saw in the lot did. I had it for 2 weeks before the event so if it did not have a hitch I figured that I could trade it in for one that did.

Damn, I knew the owners manual was there for a reason. Luckily, I don't think I went fast enough to engage the EOD, and since this was spring of last year, I am probably safe.

Anyone want to buy a small truck?
