Read up on the NC DMV site on the difference between license points and insurance points. That will explain it to you pretty well.

You are missing the obvious answer...just slow down.
Remember the Highway Patrol Motto:
Nine you're fine,
Ten you're mine.

Try letting the other guy run fastest....except on course or track.

The first ticket is the warning shot over the bow. It is the second conviction that starts costing the big bucks.

Avoid using a PJC for anything other than a second violation or a very serious first violation. If you use the PJC first and then get another ticket in 3 years then both violations go on your record. And you insurance company gets to rip a new one for you.

No offense to Carl Fisher's advice, but lawyers do not know what they are doing all the time with tickets. Lots of times they will not pay the $7 it costs to pull your MVR and determine exactly what you need. They also do not understand insurance. Your insurance agent is the best person to give you advice since he is the one who knows exactly what will effect YOUR policy and and that is what you are most concerned with, that being said here are some of the variables.

1. If your last ticket that was pleaded to improper equipment shows on your mvr then you do not want a pjc because if you have any kind of conviction showing then the pjc gets insurance points.

2. Most improper equipements are city violations so they normally don't show on the MVR. That is why it is important to KNOW what is on your MVR.

3. You can have one PJC per HOUSEHOLD and not be surcharged for it. Meaning, If you are on a policy with anyone else they can't have one also or you both willget the points.

4. You can have one "freebie" (10 or less over the speed limit in most cases-over 75mph confuses this) per driver in the house hold.

5. Here is the really confusing part. You can manipulate the ticket so no points are surcharged but that does not mean your premium will not go up. You can lose discounts/be put in another tier which causes your premium to go up. Bottom line if someone has no tickets they normally get a better rate than someone who has freebies and/or PJC.
ASK YOUR INSURANCE AGENT.

I hope all of this was confusing enough to convince all who read that they need a local insurance agent to wade through all this stuff. this not an advertisement for me just a warning not to call a Lizard at an 800 number and expect the kind of knowledge you get from somebody in your own community.

I just emailed the lizard, I felt a little nervous actually telling my insurance company that I got a ticket, but I told them it was 9 over...this would be assuming that it got reduced. They said there is no increase for 9 over, and also b/c my record has been clean for the last 3 years.

For the judicially niave (but apparently heavy-footed) among us, does the "sharpie reduction" to 9 mph over only happen on the scheduled date of court appearance or can it be obtained by showing up prior to the court date? (Court appearance not required if you appear before court magistrate and plead quilty).

I got grabbed for 79 in a 60 a few months back in Madison County, out near the TN line. Going downhill, just lettin' the dogs run.

Cop said he actually got me at 83! Anyway, I hired a lawyer over the phone/fax recommended by a friend. He asked me about priors (none), and said the best he could do was get it down to +9. No insurance points, but there would be 2 license points (I think) which would expire in two years if I didn't get pinched again.

Did the whole deal via FAX and paid $220 total. Lawyer got $70. state got $150. Painless.

Recommend you talk to Marcus, our "Club Lawyer" and pay him to handle it for you.

Remember when Marcus spoke at one of the club meetings and said, "If you're gonna speed, speed deliberately". That is, pick your spots. And one of them isn't on a heavily travelled road in town. The cop won't cut you no slack, especially at 15-20 over. They'll write you up every time.

My $.02 worth.
