Ok - so we are new to the area and have tried a couple of sushi houses already. They were ok, but not great. Does anyone here have any recommendations for good sushi in the Fuquay/Garner/Apex/Holly Springs/Cary area? I know, that is a wide area, but when you want the best sushi, you have to travel. So, share... where is the best?

Maybe it is in Durham/Chapel Hill... thats ok too... tell me where.

Sushi Blues in downtown Raliegh is good, especially if you like rolls.

Sushi Tsune on Hillsboro St. in Raleigh, near NC. State. Solid budget Sushi. Good lunch specials. Inexpensive, no frills, good service. Before I left Raleigh, I had lunch here nearly weekly for 2 years.

Kashin - Crossroads shopping center in Cary (US1, I440) Interesting "special" rolls. Average price. Good service. Surprisingly easy to get a table on a weekend night.

Sushi Thai - one in Cary, one in Raleigh. Good bargain on their $1 roll nights. Good squid salad. Bigger and busier, better ambiance. Also good Thai dishes if you're not in the mood for Sushi.

I'm not a big fan of Sushi Blues and Sushi Breeze - both in downtown Raleigh. Fun places to hangout, but the sushi just isn't as good. Since they're hangout spots, they're seemed really busy, and service was a bit slow.

The rest of the places I'm thinking of are probably too far up into N. Raleigh. (Waraji, Shaba Shabu, Tokyo House). All of them are pretty good. Waraji is the best, but you pay for it. Shaba Shabu is really trendy, and the music is WAY too loud for my mid 30s taste, but the food was good. Tokyo House is in a strip mall, and is pretty unassuming.

Only the Sushi Thai in Raleigh does $1 night.

The ST in Cary is awesome, and is the only local place that has conch.

Surprisingly, Kanki in the Glenwood mall is really good. Their nigiri is also $3 for two pieces instead of one which is a bargain compared to ...

Asuka in Morrisville, which is good, but hellapricey for what you get. They seem to get more "exotic" fresh fish in like Toro, though. Smaller sized rolls there.

Sushi Blues has a unique atmosphere, and can be hard to get into on weekends.

Scott can mention more about Durham area sushi.

Depends on how you define "Raleigh Area." The two I know

In Durham, last I went to Shiki Sushi on 54 (Fayetville Rd exit, go away from Southpoint, left onto 54, first strip mall on left), it was outstanding. And they had some pretty exotic stuff, to my untrained eye anyway. Baby octopus, unni, lots of stuff I was not familiar with.

One of the people who took me there just told me the cool chefs all left that one, and went to Akashi on 54/55 in the same strip mall (I *think* as Sal's Pizza. The one by the train tracks that's sort of down in a hole.

I like Sushi Thai on Lake Boone (great Spider rolls!) and Sushi Blues on Glenwood South is good too. On the northern end of Glenwood (Duraleigh Rd.) is a place called Waraji that is a bit pricey but more upscale.

Thanks for the input everyone... keep the reviews coming.

We are heading out tonight for some and I will report back my thoughts. I think we are going to hit Kashin in the Crossroads shopping center. We can swing by a store or two... then grab some sushi.

I will let you know what we think

The best place I went to is on Duraleigh just past where it intersects with Glenwood Avenue. It's in the same strip mall as Salsa Fresh (a great Burrito place). I can't remember the name off hand (edit: It's Waraji, thanks Rob), but it kicks the crud out of Sushi Blues and Kanki. It's on the expensive side, but worth it. - AB

In Durham/RTP try Akashi on 54 near the 55 intersection. It's in that little strip by the train tracks that looks like it's down in a hole. The chefs are really nice there and the sushi is pretty good. They also have half price rolls Thurs-Sat.

We used to goto Shiki Sushi on 54 near the Fayetteville Rd intersection which is also decent, but their best sushi chefs left to start up Akashi.

We didn't know they had left and didn't see them for about 8 months, but the first time we went to Akashi they remembered us and what things we liked. They also get special fish (Toro, Spanish Mackerel, etc) in from time to time if you ask.

I like Tokyo house, strip mall placement sucks but it is good. Also Asuka, I didn't think portions were too bad for the price and they have different stuff. Also, there is a place in Briercreek, Yakatori or something that is good.

Sushi Thai is OK, Waraji is always good.

I have not been impressed with Shabu Shabu, Sushi Blues etc. Sushi Tsume is good, but choices somewhat limited.

Best ever is Kaz's in Washington DC ummmmmmmmmmmm

We went to Miradori (i think) in NYC last week. All you can eat, pretty plain sushi but quality good and fresh
