You can still get daily driver Detomaso Panteras for $25k if you look hard to find the right deal. In retrospect, it's better to spend the $30k-$35k for a fully restored model with the Wilwood brakes and other classy upgrades.

I'll go off and work on my rusty Italian car now...

Mid-engine, Honda, what else can you ask for! If only they would depreciate faster!!

Good looking, I'll give it. It's just always seemed less than impressive in the performance department. Is there much you can do to it to get more HP easily? Seems like with limited production there probably isn't much in the aftermarket to help it...I'm asking here, I don't know much about them.

I'm not biased at all but there is lot of used, nice, fast, Porsche under $30000. If you like V8 rumble, 928 S4 can be bought easily under $15000, strip the inside install a cage and you have a nice track car. Not having the 911, that's probably what I will be building.
When we where living in Montreal, a guy in the Porsche club had a 928S4 like that and that car was stupidly fast on the race track.

Donnie,

I am not that knowledgeable myself. I think the entire NSX concept was to provide super car styling and performance along with all of the good things that come with a Honda (engineering, ergonomics, reliability, build quality, reasonable price, etc.). I think there are three things that you can pick on the car. First, it is long over do for a new model. Because it was such a ground breaking car for it’s time, this has allowed it to hold on for so long (which is both good and bad). I think it introduced variable valve timing (VTEC) to the world (in production form). I also don’t know what other production cars had an all aluminum body as well at that time. Second, it didn’t set the world on fire with the level of power that it produced. But this fell in line with Honda’s philosophy. They felt (and still do) that they can make do with a smaller displacement engine via superior engineering. S2000 is example of that today. Also I think that Honda wants you to be wowed by the overall package and to focus less on the lack of brute force power. Still, many would like to see a V8 (or V10) in the NSX. Current rumor is that the NSX replacement (2008 or so) will be a V10 and will address this complaint. Third, the car just doesn’t have the pedigree of something like a Porsche or Ferrari (the market segment it was in). I can see that argument, but then again, I think it being a Honda is a great pedigree to have. :)

I have never driven or even ridden in one, but would love to do so. I always think in the back of my mind that when they price drops enough that I will pick up one some day. If someone in the club has one and and reads this.... "Give me a ride sometime". ;)

Regarding power improvements, I think the car received slight displacement (and power) increases over the years. But otherwise the basic engine remained the same. I believe that the normal Honda tweaks work (ECU, intake and exhaust) as well as the standard power tweaks (super/turbo charger, etc.) I believe that like most Honda engines, the basic design is pretty stout and can be developed to deliver more power reliably. I do agree that because of the limited availablilty (and cost) that there is a limited market for bolt on parts. But I believe they exist and you just have to search harder to find them. Comptech http://www.comptechusa.com/ is the first that comes to mind. They offer a supercharger kit as well as other bolt on parts (engine, suspension, etc.) Their dyno charts show that adding their air box, header, exhaust and super charger takes wheel HP from 258 to 367 (@7800 RPM) for a 2000 model NSX.

If I had $30k to spend it sure wouldn't be on 1 car

1. Porsche 951 $8-9k (set up right will run circles around a 911)
2. Alfa GTV6 $3-5K (ever heard an alfa V-6 at full song?)
3. Maserati 430 Bi-turbo $3-5K(yes its a hadache, but I have a soft spot for them)

So bascially that gets me a track car, a street car, and a basket case, with money still in my pocket!

:D

This is trick question, right?

Miat...... whoops! Who said that?

For a new car - 2006 Mustang GT.
My age-independent favorite would be one of these, substituting Cragar S/S mags for the incorrect wheel covers shown:

My car of choice for less than $3K would be a...

1992 Mazda Miata.....Oops you said $30K

In that case it would be a tough choice.

For used cars..
I've always liked Vettes and 911's. BMW M3 would be a good choice also. Like Sean, I've always loved the Pantera, there is something about Italian engineering with that Ford V8 grumble that gets my heart racing. Then if you really want to get labor intensive you can find Ferrari 308s for less than $30k. The RX7 would definately be in the running. I would even have a crap load of money left over to make it even faster.

For newer cars...
How about the 2001 Boxter S, I saw one online for 29,000. S2000s can be had for less than $30,000. The new Mustang GT HAS to be included on the list. The RX8 and the new Miata also has to be there. The STi and Evo VIII can be found without much hard work for less than 30K now, so they go on the list.

Which one would I choose? I have no idea. Indescision may or may not be my problem!!!

Looks like '01/'02 Boxster S's can be had for $26-28K. They have lost 25-30% of their orig. price, and I suspect that they would be slower to lose their value than most cars in that age bracket. A Porsche has also probably been given a lot of TLC, so a 4-5 year-old Boxster with 30-40K miles would probably still be close to showroom condition.

Buy a new Mustang today, kiss 5 grand goodbye the minute you drive it off the lot, then watch the wholesale price drift down in lockstep with the pay-off on the loan.

Well, I guess it would have to be MINI Cooper. A little low in the "umph" department, but quite nimble & fun to drive. Plus, how many new cars in the $20K range are capable of top PAX *&* ~40mpg. :)

I've been asking myself this question a lot recently, having found myself with an unloved race car and an impossibly large SUV I'm thinking of getting rid of.

The one that keeps calling my name is a E46 BMW 330i. With the performance package. I'll take mine in red with black leather.

It's the only car that answers all my questions. I can go to the track. I can win an autocross in D Stock. I can drive it to work in leather-lined comfort. I can take it to Home Depot and buy a bag of mulch.

A current Acura TL sings to me too...there's just that whole front wheel drive thing.

Either that, or a few years old Ford Escape and a few years old S2000. It'd be a little more money, but this too would answer all my current automotive questions pretty effectively. I've got Mom's Escape out in the driveway right now, and I drove a buddy's S2000 the other day. I've come away impressed with both.

C'mon Karl.. you know better; You could buy an '06 Honda Accord, and it would still break every other day. You have the automotive touch of death

$30k is more money than I can fathom.. so I'll stick with what I know, and say a bunch of crappy rusty 80's cars, and enough money to make them run.. for a little while.

If I request under $30,000, will that count?

And I pass those thanks to Ryna Holton for showing it to me. I drool over the R5 on a daily basis.
