Call it a scam if you want...

Sally and I want to donate to help the Katrina victims, but neither of our employers match funds. I don't need a tax break, but if I can double the contribution by paying an IBMer, SASer, etc to make it, well, I'm all for it.

Let me know if you can help.

Scott

I should have posted it to the THSCC List earlier today. I can't find it at cnn.com right now, but I was cruisin' around there today & found a list of companies that are donating & matching donations. Lowe's (hardware) was listed as a place donating and it said that Lowe's was matching donations from in-store customers up to $1M. I don't see anything about it on lowes.com, so I'm not certain about it, but it's worth checking out.

I'll post here again if I can find the CNN link.

I was at a Lowes last night and they had barcodes all setup at the checkout counter to do this. They had suggested amounts ($5, $10 I think) or you could specify an amount. It did mention that they would match donations. I can't remember what the upper (matching) limit was.

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Part of an E-mail received from our CEO

To help meet the immediate needs of the victims of Hurricane Katrina, beginning today and for the next two weeks, Siemens USA will match dollar-for-dollar every employee contribution to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund.

Doesn't seem to be any limit and with the # of employee in the US that will probably be a huge amount.

MCI is matching 3:1 until they hit a 250k limit. :D

EDIT: For whats its worth. I dont know what it takes to get on the CNN list but in addition to matching funds MCI is sending its emergency communications fleet (mobile internet, telephone, wireless and fax) and prepaid phone cards.

I'm sure I will catch flack for this, but oh well. I'm all for donating to help these people. However after the ARC's mis-management of the 911 donations I'm not getting in line to see if they will do a repeat.

I'd prefer we find another way to have our contribution matched, through Lowes or whatever.

My .02 worth.

I don't really care what place we donate to as long as it is known to be reputable, so I'm not promoting one place over the other. I do think at some point, though, you probably just have to trust the reputable organizations to do the best they can to do the right things.

Here's the donatation information on the FEMA site...
