I can't seem to find a good answer about this. Is it illegal to drive a car with a sizeable (12") long crack that is not at all in the driver's line of vision?

Will the car pass inspection?

(Things I have read indicate - no, it is not illegal, and yes, the car will pass inspection)

Not illegal, although a DMV officer or a cop can give you a hard time if it's "obstructing the driver's view."

It only matters for inspection purposes if it interferes with the windshield wipers.. which they almost never do.

Ann has about an 8" crack that started life at the very top of the windshield. Slowly working its way down. It doesn't impair your view but it is on the drivers side. Also got a nice star hole from a flung rock at the base of the windshield. The car passed inspection about a month ago.

I just picked up some Permatex windshield repair stuff. For cracks and star holes. I'll be trying it out today or tomorrow. Will let you know if it works worth a darn. Supposedly will fill in the crack and the star.

Let me weigh in on this. I am a state inspector and do windshield repairs.
The windshield cannot be broken so bad that the wiper does not clean it well or be opaque. If it is caved in you officially flunk it for wipers. The repair kit you can buy in the parts store will not fill an 8 inch crack. With a professional kit I would have to drill into the crack in 2 places to inject resin. It also will not dissappear. Repairs usually improve in appearance but they do not go away. You also get one shot at the repair. If it does not do well you cannot inject a star a second time. A crack could be drilled into at a second place but, that is about it.
