I think you only get a sincere change of optics by going into the L series of lenses. Kevin will correct me if I'm wrong, he's more up to date than I am.

At this point, I'd only by the 300D if I got a smoking deal on a used one. (Assuming the difference between the XT and the 300 is comparable to the 20D and the 10D. It's astounding how Canon keeps managing to make significant improvements to these dSLRs.)

What are you planning on taking pictures of?

The XT isn't a huge upgrade over the previous Rebel, but for what I do it's worth trading up.

The non-L lenses are mostly pretty much the same as far as image quality; some of them are slightly better than others but not even close to most of the L stuff. This is speaking from my experience - others may have gotten a great non-L lens and a crappy L lens (quality control isn't 100.0%) and compared the 2 with different results. All of the L stuff I've owned has been prime lens quality.

If you're not going for the best quality 20x30 enlargements, I'd just recommend one of the 75-300 consumer lenses. There may be slight differences between the IS version & non-IS, but they're seriously all good enough for professionals. And note that with IS, it will freak out if the subject is moving. Oh, and it uses massive amounts of battery power.

I'm just looking for a normal SLR camera that's digital. I took a lot of pictures with my OLD (older than many of us) Canon TX for a lot of years, and it's been broken for a while now...

I want to be able to do basic autocross photography and the normal family vacation stuff, but without the limitations of a point and shoot. I need to be able to click and have the picture go NOW.

The most I would likely ever do is an 8x10 print, and the chance of that is probably under 5%. Most of the time I'll just be cropping or reducing resolution and posting on the net. Unfortunately, there aren't really any point and click types that offer the flexibility of an SLR.

Honestly, if anyone sold a 3-5 MP unit I'd consider that, it's just that to get an SLR you have to get bells and whistles.

I have both the 28-105 and 75-300 USM lenses and they've always been great. The USM is clearly worth it too for the AF speed and quieter drive (not that noise would matter at an auto-x). I've used them a bunch for several years and they still work as good as day 1.
