Apparently there is a state trooper standing at or near a construction zone dressed as a construction worker complete with sign and radar gun. This was passed along to me by a co-worker who spotted it and then realized what it was (after doing slightly faster than he should have been doing). Not sure if it's East or West, but it's somewhere between Cary and Durham. Just beware if you like slightly elevated excitement on the highway.

They will go even further than that, the DOT here in Division 2 will lend them yellow DOT trucks and have the radar/trooper in it. Another one was around the corner giving the tickets. They called it project "Yellowjacket".

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

Hmmm. Does it even out if you dress like a cop for the morning commute?

I absolutely fully support obeying the speed limit in construction zones (and I've never worked in one or known anyone who has).

The problem is that it appears from traffic that the vast majority of other drivers consider construction zones to be MAXIMUM possible speed zones so it is hard to obey the law and not get run over :( Hopefully some enforcement will help deal with the problem.)

I would agree with you except for the number of bogus construction zones. Go under I40 on 147 (right before it goes into Alexander) and you will see a construction zone that has not had anyone in it for at least a month. I know there was one state that was successfully sued because they made the construction zone longer than was needed and kept it around even after the work was done just because they could generate more revenue from tickets written. Now, this is not the case on I40, but I think there are games being played with construction zones and the ticketing therein that have nothing to do with safety.

at one point probably 10 years ago the police in the tampa, FL area had police dressed up as homeless people holding "will work for food" signs with holes in it for the radar gun..

The area around Salisbury on I85 has been under construction since I started college in 97. I don't think they started any work for the first two years. I suppose they had to do some 'Fund Raising' before they could bring out the Tonka toys.

back when my wife was with raleigh pd, they used to run a trap on 540 b/w 40 and 70...they got a broken down van and stuck two officers in it with radar...they would radio the calls to about 7 or 8 cars on the Lumley on-ramp to come pull you over.

they ran this once every couple of months when 540 first opened up...don't know if they still do it.

A ticket wont even pay for the fuel for piece of equipment for a day! Some of our more specialized pieces cost upwards of $110/hour to operate

Thats a WHOLE lot of tickets

I haven't seen the broken down van trick lately. But between the Raleigh PD and State Troopers that area is a trap waiting to happen. I commute from Creedmor Rd to I40 on it everyday. They setup on the grass in the middle right under the Glenwwod Ave overpass. If you're coming from Creedmor Rd end towards the airport you can't see them until you crest the incline. They are right there. Too late!

Wilmington PD did that last year, except the sign went so far as to say "Will ticket for speed!" By the time victims were close enough to read it they had been nailed.
