I've sold the bottom end (assembled long block) from the old car. I need some pointers on packing and shipping this iron slug.

Weight is 200 pounds even.

Anyone deal with some local shippers? Trying to find a decent rate, but reliable service as well.

Thanks,

Scott

Once you decide on a shipper (trucking company for that weight and size I expect) They may have specific requirements as to crating, wrapping, but I'd build a snug wooden crate with 2x4 skids on the bottom so they can get a pallet lifter under it at a minimum. Bolt it together and the block bolted in place so it can't move. They will probably expect it to be drained of all fluids and wrapped in plastic to keep it leak free. You might check with furniture companies etc to see if you could recycle one of their heavyweight plastic bags. A hefty bag probably isn't going to cut it.

My engine builder crates his engines up as Chuck describes, and ships them off via Delta Freight. If there is a terminal at the destination, the customer just picks it up. This confuses the folks at both terminals, though. They're used to box trucks and accounts, but you can bring a pickup truck and pay by credit card.

Gaping hole in airport security? Lets hope not.

Recently one of my builder's engine blocks was "holed" by an enthusiastic forklift operator. Fortunately the block was insured, but now there is more armor in his crating methods.
