Has anyone else gotten this game yet?

If you haven't and care even the least bit about video games (I'm assuming you already enjoy driving fast) I will assure you it's worth the price of admission.

If you have what was your car of choice to start out with?

I put this up over at honda-tech as well...

I too got it last night. My impressions are mixed. I built basically a Honda Challenge H1 hybrid with the 100K I imported in...since I could never afford to do so in real life. My thoughts...the not so good:

- It drives very different from 2 and 3. Not necessarily a bad thing, just different.

- The beginning races...I dunno, the AI seems artificially fast. Got a buddy driving a 3rd gen RX-7 stock. He's getting walked on the straights...by vintage 1600c Datsuns.

- Why is it bumping the revlimiter for 2 seconds in A/T mode on every upshift?

- What happened to the "Qualify" option?

The good:

- It looks like a million dollars

- Amazing selection of cars...Caterham, mmm...

- Nurburgring...

I have to say I like the AI being unreasonably dificult. For me the only fun races are the ones that you don't get the lead until halfway through the last lap.

As for the rev limiter issue. Why are you driving an automatic?

I do miss the opportunity to qualify. Even though I hardly ever used it knowing I could was nice.

I didn't import any money so I started out with a first gen crx (an old family favorite). I was amazed at how well it drove. The game rewards finesse on the controls and could not be played without the pressure sensitive controls the ps2 provides.

Something to do with the way I hold the controller I guess, I'm constantly switching camera views and downshifting at the wrong time in manual mode.

I think they made the AI a little too good for the beginner races. They seem to have taken out qualifying so you have to start DFL every race. It seems after the first series if you didn't spend all your money upgrading your car then you're hosed as pretty much the entire field just walks away at the start every time. Tried it in b-spec mode too, where the computer drives, and he still finished like 5th or 6th every time heh.

Other than that it's pretty sweet. I like being able to play with more cars in arcade mode, in gt3 it seemed you could only use the one designated for each track, now you can pick from nearly all of them to play around with.

Well it is about damned time it got released. I was supposed to get it a year ago as a present. Ann and the kids got me a PS2, with feedback steering wheel and pedals. So I ended up buying GT3 for like $20.

Playing that game with a joystick or paddle would be useless in my opinion. It's a blast with feedback steering! I like GT3. Have several different cars that I mess with. The 96 GS feels pretty accurate. I only play it in Simulation mode. Never tried arcade mode or other features. The qualifying option is nice if it is a course that is tough for you. Not starting in 6th all the time can be a break.

I'll get GT4 once the crowd slows down and it is readily available.
How much was it?

Graham

Yes but hold on Ryan. There is a new game for the Xbox coming out to compete with GT4. In fact it should have been released. Since they targeted the release date against GT4.

49.99+tax at EB at Southpoint, about the same as any other new video game. They had about a million and a half copies, I don't think it would be any trouble to find one.

Forza. They actually pushed the release back until early May. It looks awesome. I have a hard time believing it will surpass GT4 though. However that won't stop me from buying it as well.

There was a pre-release version on a demo disc (Xbox magazine) of Forza a few months back. I played it a few times with all of the "driver aids" turned off. And I was pleasantly surprised as to how hard it was to drive an ALMS Audi prototype! It should have been hard and it was, so I have hope for this game. It did seem much more realistic than something like Project Gotham Racing 2 (PGR2). Like comments I have seen on GT4, you can’t go crazy with braking and turning at the same time, must be smooth, etc. In Forza you really had to be careful with the throttle at lower speeds as well as the brakes because you could either lock it up or break it loose pretty easy. The demo looked generally finished, but I think it probably was good to wait until GT4 had been releases just in case they needed to rework any features. Or maybe they had seen enough pre-release GT4 info that they decided they needed to rework parts of it.

There is absolutely no reason that someone can’t make a driving game as good (looks and game play) as Polyphony Digital does with the GT series (especially on the Xbox). It is just time, money and the commitment to do it right. The killer thing that Xbox games like Forza may have over GT4 (or pretty much any PS2 game at this point) is Xbox Live. Frankly I can’t imagine playing just against AI anymore. It is just not anywhere close to the level of fun of real people. Anyhow, time will tell if Forza can live up to the hype.

Another good Xbox racing game is TOCA Race Driver 2. Not quite as “Arcade” as PGR2. Still, I love and continue to play PGR2. It is not GT3/4 and it is not supposed to be either. In addition to the Xbox (main game machine), I have a GameCube and PS2 as well, but these are mostly for the kids. I may have to think about getting GT4, but I may just wait for Forza and maybe pick up GT4 after the price drops. If only Sony didn’t have an exclusive agreement with Polyphony Digital (did Sony buy them as well?) we could see this game on the Xbox.
