YMMV = your mileage may vary. For example Contour SVTs get excellent mileage, while Excursions... not so good ... mileage...get.

Les - what do you mean by "I would buy a car at Carmax also, if I weren't a car guy." ? I assume you mean you would patronize one of our club sponsors instead, right?

Take your head out of you rear much?

Its called joking, and unless you simply don't pay attention or know anyone on these boards you would realize that. Hell that is what 90% of the posts here are, jokes and giving other poeple a hard time.

I understand what he's saying, I think. My interpretation of the CarMax buyer is someone who doesn't know much about the used car buying process. Face it- it can be a major pain in the ass sometimes. Being car guys, we are 10x more informed than the average used car shopper, or so I'd like to think.

Unless I got lucky and found a deal like the one Karl got I'd never buy a car at Carmax. Those deals are there -- several years ago I almost bought an E36 M3 for nearly $5k under kbb retail.

I have recommended them to others several times. They offer relatively fair prices and great customer service for people who don't know the difference between a dipstick and a lug bolt. Enthusiasts who are comfortable doing their own maintenance would do much better finding private parties.

My experience with trying to sell cars to them was varied -- they offered an insane lowball on the WRX but a fair price on my wife's '03 Outback. We ended up doing the package deal (sell both, buy one new car, reduce debt load) at Performance but would have taken their price on the Outback alone.

i don't know about everyone else, but i'm basing my opinions based on my experiences.'

i should also add that my dad sold his Honda S2000 there for a reasonable price. i totally understand that they have to buy a car for less than what they can sell it for, cause that's how they make $$$, but when they offer you 40% of the going market rate, that's a lowball offer in anyone's book.

btw, what is YMMV??????

Matt's essentially got my meaning. Basically, I've bought 20 cars in the last 15 years. With that kind of volume, I learned early on that I have to maximize the transactions in my favor :) , most of the time, that means buying from an individual. Particularly since I have also done all my own car matainance/repairs the last 15 years. And am fairly skilled at telling whether a used car is a POS or a good car. But, my last few car transactions have actually netted me a positive return. Of course the Mustang will not, but I knew that going into it.

However, if I was just some shmuck who buys a Camry every 5 years and takes it to Jiffy Lube for service, Carmax would be a decent place for that transaction.

So... the lesson learned is that if anyone is looking for info they should not visit this forum? I can say that 90% of my posts are not about jokes or giving other people a hard time.

No the lesson for the day is if you can't a joke, or even have a clue when someone is making one then you need to lighten up.

Especailly if its not directed at you, but at someone that trades jokes and snide remarks with the best of them.

So again

Mine may have been cheap relative to the market because it is a 2WD. :whoknows: I know they dropped the price on it a full $1000 while it was in the Orlando Carmax.

Since this is a semi-public forum, your comments can be read by anyone who is a member. Perhaps you should use the private message feature for comments directed at one individual and the 90% of posts that are useless. Of course, that might rid you of the opportunity to show your keyboard bravado and insult people you don't know.

Bravdo? Here we go with the head in a bad location again....

It was directed at someone I do know, quite well actually. Perhaps you should keep your internet cop tendancies and holier than thou attitude to your self and people you actually know.

Ok, I am as guilty as anyone else for helping push this off topic. Sorry about that as I should know better. But...

(putting moderator hat on)

Can we try to keep this on topic and take the personal attacks to email or PMs?

(taking moderator hat off)

Thank you... Move along, nothing to see here...

I had good expreicnes with carmax in a way... I will tell according to carfax both cars bought thier had been in accidentes, the first one was my wifes talon it was in a slight fender bender. The other was a sweet 91 240sx that had 55,000 miles on in 1997, It had gaping holes in its history and the only action it had was when car max bought it at auciton, the car had been in a severe front end accident acording to the nissian dealer as a lot fo the radiator supports and other body parts had been replaced or straitened, they said the car was safe and it was done correctly, however my wide and I did not feel comfortable with the car, now in carmax's favor when we took it back to return it they did not give us a hard time and as soon as my wife said she was not comfortable with the car they took it back asap.

Well here's a different slant for you on the Carmax idea.

I bought 1 car from Carmax about 5-6yrs ago. The price was ok. The car had not been thoroughly inspected and we had problems with it the 1st month. I got it repaired and they did make good and pay the bill. So I would ignore their 180 point inspection thing they advertise and still have your own mechanic check it before you buy it.

Since then I have bought 3 cars from Hertz (right up the street). Blast the idea of buying rental cars all you want. But so far I've gotten 3 good cars with only minor problems over time. Biggest thing is limited selection.

99 Pontiac Grand AM - has 90K on it now. Only had to replace alternator and water pump so far. Alternator covered under warranty.

99 Chevy Prism - A Toyota Corolla with Chevy floor mats. Has about 55K on it now. Haven't replaced a thing on it.

00 Chevy Monte Carlo - has 90K on it now. Had to replace low coolant sensor under warranty. That's all.

Also note that Carmax buys a lot of their cars from the dealers off their lease programs or at auction when the dealers put them up. Some dealers are not allowed to keep lease returns and have to put them up at auction. So check with a dealer for lease returns on cars that are on your shopping list.

Oh and skip that extended warranty from Carmax/Hertz/etc.. You can get the same quality extended warranty through your auto insurance company and other places at about half the price. They make a killing on those extended warranty plans.

Just another opinion/idea.

Graham
