So on the way to work this morning, I'm exiting 540 to 70 W. and the detector starts going ape shit with a tone I hadn't heard before. I lift (wasn't sincerely speeding anyhow) and get my eyes on the display and it spells L A S E R.

I think the source was further up 540 (west bound) since I never saw a car or anything else.

So was this a glitch? Or did NC troopers up the ante? Anyone know?

Were you near a late model SUV or BMW? My laser notification activates when I get near a vehicle that has rear proximity sensors.

That's a good question. I've never had my laser alarm go off on my V1 except by some over-the-highway info signs on I-77 in WV.

BTW, I was up there for turkey day (I-77 in WV) and noticed something strange. They had those speed display signs on the side of the road. You know the ones that make you speed up to see how high the numbers will go?

Well typically those have the constant-on X-band radar that even a cheap RD can pickup from a good distance. Well as I approached my V1 never gave a peep, but the display did change to my speed since I was the fastest car at the time.

Anyone seen these before? How was my speed detected?

Trunk monkey, in the sign, with a stopwatch? That sounds like a Clue game.

I have no idea, they've always set my radar off well before hand so I can get a running start. :)

Chris might be on to something. There was an SUV near me, but it didn't seem nice enough or new enough to have that feature.

Was your Valentine turned on at the time?

Laser detection on my V1 is often set off by the new neon third brake lights on many GM vehicles. You need to be fairly close, though.

My V1 laser goes of at the same spot. I don't think it's the fuzz b/c it's happened more than once and I couldn't spot any patrolmen.

Another spot:
Hillsborough St. directly in front of the State library.

I always keep my setting on the most sensitive mode. I think it's "A" for all bogeys mode. My wife hates the excessive beeping but I'm used to it and usually my stereo drowns it out.

got tagged last month on 540 @ the 70 interchange. he was sitting in the median hidden from oncoming west bound traffic. try not to hold it against me. don't know if he had a laser but it would be my guess as the traffic was fairly heavy. and yes i was going faster than traffic.

David,

To answer your original question....I have a detector that senses laser. It has always gone off in that section of I540 and around any other airport. I think it is set off by the radar used by the airport. The only other time the laser tone goes off is when I am in NY and pass police lasers. In NC, it is always by the airport.

Whne the cops sit by the overpass on I540 and you get hit with police radar, it is always K band, not laser.
