Our f250 was not that expensive,4k dollars or something. Its a 2wd quad cab ford f250,wiht the 7.3l turbodiesel v8,non intercooled..Later ones were intercooled and had great power. The 5r110 trans is good I hear..But,if you are looking for a daily suv..Then a toyota 4runner,they are indestructable.

Never understood throwing the money away on trading a car into a dealership. Always sell private party. NADA value on a base model 2wd 2013 patriot is $15,400. I figure you could sell it for $13-14k on craigslist all day long.

I used to say things like that too. It's an absolute base model with manual locks and windows, gets 21 mpg on the highway, has a grenade for a transmission and they go for $13k tops on Autotrader at dealers before haggling. Keep in mind, most of us are GOOD at flipping cars. It's what we do.

When the owner is a 70 year old widow that doesn't want to deal with creeps and you can gain leverage on a new vehicle purchase the game changes. Plus, I'm not driving from downtown Raleigh to Briar Creek everytime some Craigslist lowballin' tire kicker says they want to see the car.

Some people just don't want to deal with strangers and selling them a car and then having to go find a notary that will notarize documents at a time when you both are able to. Or maybe the vehicle is financed and then that really starts getting troublesome. Who knows where the title is, so you have to figure that out, then the person buying the car has to pay the bank, not you, and hopefully the title can be at a local branch so they can get it and not have to wait for it in the mail. I suspect the car being financed is a big reason most people trade cars, plus when your talking about something of value, they probably are going to be financing it so you have to wait for them to work that out with their bank and them to cut the buyer a check to give the seller and what not.

Where as if I trade the car into the dealer they handle everything, I sign some documents and walk away with my new car in a couple hours.

Just the old saying "Money simply affords convenience."

You are only notarizing the current owner's signature. The buyer does not need to be present.

I've sold cars worth $400 to $10k on Craigslist and I've always thought it was worth the effort.

Have you ever traded a car in the past? If the deal can be right, it's the easy button. It all depends upon if you feel that getting MAXIMUM $$ for a car is worth the effort. When I sell a car on Craigslist, I put out a price to get it to move fast, so that way I don't have to deal with a million people. My last car I sold on there ('94 850 Turbo Wagon about 5.5 years ago), I priced it such that I had 9 buyers in 4 hours willing to pay asking price. Sold it to the first person that inquired.

In Matt's case, his mom isn't going to do the deal, he is.... and she cares not if she loses money by trading as the car she has is a known time bomb. Matt is doing the right thing by trading it. - AB
