so, odd question for you.... anyone here done one of the DNA tests? If so, which one did you choose. I think it would be interesting to see where on earth, or not of earth, I come from. I've seen several different kits, not sure if any are more credible than other brands. I know I have some European back ground with my mom being from Germany, just not sure about my dad's origins.

Appreciate any opinions on these...

Before he passed away, I convinced my Dad to do one of these. We used Family Tree DNA. It's been about 10 years since we did it, but it had some interesting info that allowed us to fill out some branches of our family tree. They have a couple of different tests, with varying prices and levels of info provided.

It depends on your end goal genealogy and/or health susceptibility. Many of these companies come and go. There were a lot fewer restrictions on the information they could give you a few years ago. 23andme is one of the more popular ones lately. They used to give you all sorts of health information, but the FDA stepped in to be sure they were giving accurate information with doctor counseling. It's useless to tell someone that they have an elevated 5% risk of breast cancer without context. Now you can pay IIRC $200 to get both or just $100 for genealogy. I think there are around 40 disorders that they can give you risk information on. I've always planned on doing one, but have not. I teach Genetics at State and we do talk about this in class a bit.

That being said, I'm sure there are other companies out there. I've just not looked into them.

I wonder if these tests can predict a funny laugh. :)

Family Tree DNA Family Finder seems to be the lowest cost for "where are you from", especially if you catch a sale.

https://www.familytreedna.com/family-fi ... mpare.aspx

My wife has used it for herself and her siblings, etc.

It has limitations due to the way DNA gets passed on and other factors I don't understand. However, there is a decent amount of explanatory info on their website.

The FDA is ALL OVER my wife's research now thanks to these clowns. I believe they were the first research study to be regulated in they way they are.

All these responses and nobody has brought up the conspiracy theories yet about how to government will eventually wind up with your DNA in a database?

My wife did, she wasn't convinced. It was pretty generic "your from Europe". She supposedly has some Cherokee back ground and there was no mention of that so she thinks it's bogus. Who knows!

I too have wondered where Rodney came from, but didn't feel investigating his DNA was going to really answer the questions.

Someone needs to steal a sample from VK and submit it. I suspect he may have some shocking results...

62% BMW
18% Porsche
10% Mercedes
9% Audi
1% Ford

Money can't buy happiness, but somehow it's more comfortable to cry in a Porsche than a Kia.

My mother in-law did through Ancestry.com. It actually came back with pretty detailed information with percentage splits and the like. I still think it falls into "For entertainment purposes only", similar to the whole "star naming registry". Whoever came up with that one is a genius. - AB

QFT. I had an old co-worker who's boyfriend "bought her a star" as a gift, which she thought was utterly hilarious and stupid. You have to admire someone who can sell something that doesn't belong to them, and can be sold a million times over. Talk about a profit margin!

They will add your DNA to a database and, when you crap in the neighbors yard you *will* get busted.
