I want to build a shed on my lot and it's proving to be a challenge with Wake Co, but I'd rather know I'm in compliance. I talked to a permitting person and if I'm building the building on piers, I need an engineer to approve. I have an idea of what I want in regard to the footings and floor, I just need someone to approve it. Can anyone on here help me out?

I knew Cash was into the engineering thing, didn't know he was certifiable!

Calling Cash....

If for some reason Cash can't do it and you need another option- Rob Munach has looked at structural issues on my house and he has done HPDE with tarheel in the past:

I've pulled the trigger on having a local company build it. Considering the possible rising prices of lumber after the storm, decided it was best to have it built at a quoted price. It will be a barebones build, but I'll "mod" the building after it's up and inspected.

All that said, I will need to run power to it, so if anyone had a recommendation of a good electrician, I'm looking for one. Hoping the building will be up in about 3 weeks.

Unfortunately, I'm not a Structural Engineer and NC law prohibits me from sealing work outside my area of expertise. That said, I would think you could get guidance from Wake Co inspections for something as simple as footings for a shed. Seems like a design sealed by an engineer is overkill.

Steve Eubanks 919.621.3006 He's into cars as his other job is that he builds custom Hot Rods. He's working on a 1956 Ford F1. You will have to dig the power out to the building. Trench has to be 2' deep.

Thanks for the link Rob! I've seen snipets of info that if the wire is located in a conduit, then it doesn't need to be 2' deep, but I'm have a hard time finding specific information to validate that. After the building is up, I'll give Steve a call...

Conduit is cheap, and it's much easier to fix a wiring issue if you don't have to dig the wire up, not to mention it being protected is a good thing. When I built mine I ran conduit for the electrical feed, another one for misc. like CAT5 for a router, and a water line for the sink.

I don't know what the building code says, I just know that because I had to have it trenched to 2'. It seems that no one puts conduit in they just hopefully bury the wire deep. The main line to my garage is about 3' deep because they dug the trench that deep. LOL.

If i did it myself I would probably do conduit too.

If you have to dig a trench anyway, might as well lay some conduit down to make it accessible later.

When I had a prior project inspected (Durham), the inspector looked at the trench, the detached workshop and house, then asked, "Why didn't you run it on the surface in conduit?"

So, if the inspector thinks it's a good idea, it is probably OK.

I didn't want it on the surface, but if I could have done just below grade, in conduit, that would have been a lot easier than 2' down.

Other things to bury while it's dug up:

1) Ethernet (maybe even two runs in this day and age).
2) Coax (just in case, it's cheap insurance.

AND, wait for it...

3) AIR.

Yeah, it was really nice having the air compressor out back when I worked in the garage up front. Compressors are noisy. It's also really convenient to have a plumbed air line in the garage, and air in the workshop, and only one compressor.

The most important thing is to put a bunch of string in the conduit so you can pull other things through later. Non-organic would be preferable.

I suppose I will be going through this soon with the garage build. What did you guys use to dig your trenchs? Since I will have about 100' worth to dig, I am thinking of renting what I would call a trencher (not sure what it's official name is, but it looks like a stump grinder with a large chain saw on the front).

Yes a trencher (Ditch Witch). Also invest in a trench shovel. It will be money well spent.
