lol, yeah.... looking for lost treasures in the back yard. I guess this got sidetracked a bit. I've contacted a few "shed" companies, one was very willing to talk to me and one has never followed up, go figure...

I am finally having my garage built in the next few weeks. I went back and forth deciding to build it myself or have Carolina Custom Builders do it for me. The factors that swayed me towards having it built were:

1. Dealing with the City of Raleigh and permitting. By the way, I have to be 5 feet off the rear, 10 on the sides and it will be
close.
2. Getting a good slab. For example, my builder told me in order to pass inspection, there has to be a 1 inch slope from the
back to the front. Would the concrete guy know that? What else would I miss?
3. Setting trusses by myself. I would have to get better friends :D
4. Time. It will take them 3 weeks start to finish. I would probably take me 3 months.

Very cool to hear your having the garage built. As for grading, you having to do any? Where I'm wanting to build the shed, I have about a 1' drop over 16', so I'd have to have some fill dirt brought in. With just having piers and the workshop, no grading, so that's saving me some money...

And yes, your concrete guy should know how to slope the floor. Are you setting it up for a lift?

The builders handle everything from grading to finished product. All they do is build garages. Grading to within 1 foot is included with the garage price, but I removed a LOT of dirt already with a backhoe as we live on top of a hill. Craigslist was perfect for getting rid of dirt. I am going with 9 foot studs, so at least I can use a lift for storage sake with small cars.

I am sure you know this, but 6" - 8" thick concrete is ideal for a lift. Good luck with everything Jordan. A new garage I am sure is exciting :) - AB

Technically pretty much ever manufacturer specs a minimum of 4" 3000 PSI concrete. Not being a fan of minimums myself, I had the slab thickness increased to 12" plus rebar reinforcement where my lift posts sit. Likely overkill, but I doubt it will ever crack.

I was told the slab will be 8" thick reinforced with rebar throughout, so I should be able to put a lift where ever I want.

I am excited to have a garage again, its been 11 years and 2 homes since the last one!

Not saying you are wrong, but that is unusual enough that I'd double check on that. Unless there is something in your local building code requiring it, 8" of concrete in the slab is way overkill, and rebar (not WWF) would be labor intensive.

For mine, Wilson County required a 12"x12" perimeter footing, and the slab in between to be 4" minimum. I specified rebar in the perimeter footing and WWF in the slab. I had additional rebar added in the lift section. A few pics during construction:

Hmm, I'll have to check on that. The builder did claim they build the slab to a commercial standard, but there's a big difference between 8 and 4 inches. I always thought the standard for concrete that gets driven on, like a driveway, was minimum 6 inches and 4 inches was reserved for walkways. I guess you can go thinner with higher psi and steel reinforcement.
