Good time to add a sprinkler system. Get it laid out before you put the top soil down will save time and money. I decided against sod because of the expensive of killing and tilling the whole yard and adding the sprinkler system. You are lucky, it sounds like half the work is already done.
You can also save a good amount if you have a dump truck load of top soil delivered and rent a bobcat to spread it out yourself. As far as sod goes, I don't know how difficult it is to do yourself, but it seems like you just lay it on the ground and keep it damp til the roots grow.
I am on the poor man's lawn plan. Results are slow at first, but I have seen steady improvement. I spend less than $200 a year. Over-seed with fescue (Kentucky 31) in spring and fall. Add nitrogen rich fertilize once a quarter (I use 11-2-2). You will need some sort of fertilizer regiment regardless of what grass you pick. The 11-2-2 is what works for my grass with my soil. The problem with fertilizer is you are feeding the grass and the weeds. You have to find a balance where you don't over feed but your grass gets enough to choke out the weeds. Also need to hit your NPK numbers so you don't burn your lawn.
Sorry for the rant. What kind of grass are you looking at? I always wanted a Centipede lawn... doesn't need to be mowed that often

I don't really have that much lawn back there so I don't want to add the expense or trouble of a sprinkler system. I also have 0 desire for a project I can hopefully afford to outsource. And while I don't have to water clay I do have to hose down the dogs after they go out in it.

I'm thinking Bermuda or centipede because of said dogs and their ability to destroy wimpy grass and leave me with only dirt.
So I want someone who can just bring in dirt, move it and plant some grass that has tough roots
