Sorry, I just talked to you at VIR, but I have a bad memory for names or even who it was that I talked to.

I had to reorganize the garage this week to make a spot for my wheel balancer, and the awning has been moved to outside storage, where it will probably get full of ants or run over by something at some point, so if you want it, then you should probably get it soon. I can transport it in the Raleigh area if you like.

The bus. The bus wants an RV awning.

Damn, I'm such an old fart.

It's only the awning part on the spring-loaded rod. The side supports and mounting brackets got twisted up when a storm at Sebring just about ripped it off the Duff Beer Mobile Oppression Palace. It's good for someone whose awning has rotted away, because that part is good, but it's not a complete awning.

It's also 17' long; I'm not sure that would fit on the THSCC bus. THSCC should sell that puny bus and buy a 35' RV like we did. then we wouldn't need a trailer, we'd have an awning, we'd have a built-in generator, amorous supermodels would hang out around our events (happens around the Duff bus all the time), and Mazda would give us all free Miatas for autocrossing. I can't see any way that that a THSCC RV plan could possibly fail.

That sounds like the awning on the RV we rented for the Daytona 24 Hours this year.

At the last club meeting I recommended we get an awning for the bus, but I specified an awning made of solar panels. Power generated by the panels will be stored in cheap lithium-ion batteries to power the mechanism that raises and lowers the awning. Or, spontaneously heat the interior of the trailer. Carlton is working out the details.

That's pretty stupid when you could just use a generator for that.

BOOM, THAT JUST HAPPENED.

Let's see how much of this argument we can dig up, just for old time's sake, for us "old guard" (since I won't/can't admit to old timer, yet) :)

Generator cost per year: $80-$120 (figuring in the cost to buy a good generator and maintain over 10 years {arbitrary})
-- Cost per AX event (since this is an AX club, I'm told): $10-$15
Fuel for Generator: $5+ per event (remember, this now handles EVERYTHING so is on all the time, or also add expenses below)

"Cost" of dealing with fuel cans, stinking up the bus/trailer, dealing with fueling the generator, unloading and setting up the generator in a volunteer run club: significant for those actually stepping up to do it.

Cost to run the bus, when needed, for 6 hours during an event = $12-$15 (depending on the price of fuel, using some assumptions on fuel consumption)
Cost to replace a deep cycle battery every few years= $5/event

Real actual $$ savings, Negligible.
Keeping things simple in a volunteer organization: priceless

Of course, all this assumes that the current equipment is actually working (not including trying to use a giant laser printer off an inverter, which was a bad idea from the start, IMO).

Any laser off of a modified sine wave inverter is a bad idea. I put a much bigger cheap modified sine wave inverter in the bus and it handled it, but it's still not a good idea.

If we got a good small 4-stroke inverter generator, like a Honda EU2000i, then you could carry it in one hand, it would use very little gas, be very quiet, and run reliably for a long time. It's $1000, but good equipment costs more than cheap equipment.

Put the generator under the awning and you'll get ten years out of it.
