My mom had a similar rear-end accident with her old 1999 minivan which popped the radiator and AC condenser. So it was not driveable. I hammered the sheetmetal enough for the hood to close, replaced a headlight light, put in a new radiator, and got it straight enough that the hood wouldn't fly open, and craigslisted it to an immigrant for something like $2500.

If it drives and is inspectable, there's a huge market. Versus selling as-is for maybe $500.

Good point - thanks, Mike. Sounds like a little time spent checking around for junkyard parts could be well worth it.

I added approximate pick + pull junkyard prices in red above. It's a pretty common car, so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding everything locally, but you'll have to hunt the parts down and pull them yourself.

Doesn't look like the repairs are too bad, but I can't tell about any bent/torn suspension or suspension mounting points. Still, doesn't look that bad to me. Would be fairly easy to do a quick and dirty repair, would probably not be worth it to try to fix it back to "as new" condition, IF you're that picky about it. I'd also want to factor in a full alignment after repairs are made.

LKQ usually has a holiday sale on the day(s) around holidays, so they should have one coming up around Christmas. Probably the Sat and Sun following, if I had to guess. The sale USED to be 50% off regular prices, but they recently changed it to 40% off- still worth looking into if you need the parts.

As others have mentioned, putting it up on Craigslist AS-IS would also be an option, it should be fairly easy to sell and it's not hard to do.

Thanks, Bret - great info - has me reconsidering repair as an option - will touch base with LKQ. I definitely don't plan to try to get it back to "as new" condition - it already had plenty of dings, faded paint, etc. - just want it safe and not looking like too much of an eyesore. Of course, finding the bumper cover and fender in the existing color would go a long way toward that goal - def don't want to get into paint work. And the suspension appears to be completely undamaged - no sign of impact to any suspension parts, and quick toe and camber checks indicate alignment is still straight.

BTW, what is "WAG"? (windshield replacement) Not familiar with that term.

WAG= Wild Ass Guess ;) Just assuming that you could get new windshield installed for around that much or less since I paid ~$175 for a new one in my BMW E39 528i a year or so ago.

Don't bother calling LKQ to ask for info on specific vehicles they have in stock or what parts might still be on them, they typically won't answer the phone, and don't have that type of info. Best bet is to stop by one day, pay your $2 entry fee and look around.

You can also check their website, they do have online inventory, usually with 1 pic of the car- but some locations are slack about updating it.

Here's the "Raleigh" location (actually between Garner + Clayton), but they have ~5 locations in NC (Durham, Greenville, Greensboro and Charlotte) and there are a couple of other Pick and Pull type yards in NC- PM me if you want info.

Thanks for the link, Bret. I see the Durham location shows two '98s (a year earlier than mine) with similar (same?) body color - would def be worth the drive to check those out. I'm surprised to see the Raleigh location shows fewer Corollas in that model range, and, unfortunately, none in the right color.

Yeah, I didn't expect to get any useful info by calling, only hoping to find out if/when they're doing the holiday discount day(s) - 40% off would make a significant difference for this project, assuming I can score the bumper, fender, and airbags.

Thanks again for all the great info.

From what I can tell, LKQ is not having a sale around Christmas, but they will be having a sale (40% off) on the weekend after New Years.

Maybe if you're lucky, they'll put out a Corolla in the correct color with good front sheet metal between now and then. ;)

A few years ago, My daughter wrecked her Corolla up in Wisconsin. On one of my vacation I dupli colored it in her apartment parking lot. With the the gas mileage they get who cares what they look like!

As Ricky mentioned, we have a very nice frame machine (18-foot 3-tower Chief rack) and there's a guy that comes in part-time who's been doing frame repair for 30 years that runs it. If you'd like to get it pulled straight again, then let me know and I can probably get you a good deal. The guy that runs the body shop in the other half of the building primarily does small quick jobs for independent dealer lots that buy wrecked cars at auction and need them fixed up for sale, so I can probably get you a good price on fixing everything as well. He fixed my minivan where my wife rear-ended another minivan and where a guy backed in to my passenger door in a parking lot and I've been happy with the work. The color match isn't 100% perfect; in low light conditions if I examine it I can see where the passenger door and front bumper are slightly darker than the rest of the car, but his price was less than half of what a larger shop wanted for the job and he'd probably re-spray it if I cared enough about it to ask him.

Following up on this thread, I decided to try to repair the car as cheaply as possible. Thanks to Bret L, I was able to score the airbags, seat belts, and fender liner from LKQ for 40% off on January 1st. I purchased the headlight, turn signal, and wsw reservoir from RockAuto - best shipped price I could find. I repaired the wiring harnesses and pulled the under-hood bent metal as best I could by myself. Due to the price of paint and lack of correct color parts available locally, I decided to retain the front fender by bending it back as straight as I could, and I stitched the front bumper cover together with ty-raps. If I keep the car I'll continue to hunt for a junkyard bumper cover in the correct color - hopefully score one at some point. I still need to get the windshield replaced. Total spent so far is $140.

Here's what it looks like now (BTW, in the background is the replacement Corolla I bought a few weeks ago, required for my daughter to get to school) -

Damn right!! A man after my own heart.

FWIW, I would think chances of finding a bumper in the right color are pretty good with that car, just keep checking the LKQ inventory and hope they keep putting little pics of the car so you can see the color without having to drive out there.

I bought an 03 BMW 530i several months ago with a huge dent in the RF fender, thought it would be no big deal to find one in the right color until I found out it was a 2003-only color. I pushed the dent out well enough to be able to drive the car and kept checking junkyard inventories, about 2 weeks ago scored a fender in the right color from LKQ. So for ~$50 the car looks great!

Nice, looks good!

Just turned a $500-750 as-is car to an easily $2000-2500 one.

Well done Keith. That's the smart option, especially given that the car wasn't overly damaged. - AB
