I've only used it sparely on a work machine, but it blows Windows8 out of the water. If you are good with Windows 7, then you might wait a bit longer to upgrade.

I did the in-place upgrade on two home laptops (mine and my wife's). I have used it a bit and so far I have been happy with it. I am moving from Win 7 and I somewhat agree with the comment above. I think you have a year (?) to perform the free 7/8 upgrade to 10. So if you are happy with Win 7, there is no rush, but you probably need to do it at some point. If I was on 8 and didn't like it (I personally hate 8.x with a passion) I would move quickly given it seems to be getting good press. Overall, it should be less of a shock (from a UI perspective) for someone moving from Win 7 (and that is a good thing). If you have any esoteric hardware or software you might search online and see if others are having issues with that before doing the upgrade. I think that an in place upgrade is reversible, but I have not looked into how to do that.

My only problem was that I had one application that for some reason started to consume a lot of CPU all of the time after the upgrade. It was a Norton product called "Norton Family" (used to set usage limits for kids). I actually didn't use it much, so I uninstalled it. Otherwise everything on my roughly 2-3 year old laptop (ASUS) transferred over and worked fine. I am generally paranoid with respect to security, so I have gone through and have tried to turn off as much of the newer spyware stuff as I can. You can find plenty of guides online on how to do that.

You can revert the upgrade. I have it on 4 machines in our house now. So far I like it, it's a bit quirky on my tablet, the touch isn't quite as precise for some reason, but i'm sure things will improve as time goes on.

There is a bit of a learning curve if you're looking for the old control panel stuff and what not, but i've found if you just go to the new settings and in the search type "control panel" it will find it no problem.

Overall I think it's good. 2 of the 4 had 8.1 before and 2 had Windows 7. It is a big improvement for laptops and desktops for 8.1, but my tablet actually worked out pretty well on 8.1 because of the metro interface and such being nice on a 8" touch screen.

Thanks, I'm kind of at a standstill right now because the site I'm on the most is saying not to go to it right now but I HATE windows 8 and want to change!

It's good to get various opinions. I am curious if you could summarize why they are saying to hold off. My kids are holding off (both Win 8.x desktops) as they have friends who say some games are broken with the upgrade. But my casual reading says gamers are not having issues.

If you're on windows 8 now, then I don't really see a downside going to 10, it would only be an improvement.

Now, if you were on windows 7 that might be different, but I see no good reason to wait for an 8 to 10 upgrade.

This! "Anything would be better" :-)

(Granted, my primary machines are XP -- Dell workstation at work (millions of control programs that I don't want to reinstall, and likely won't work at all with newer versions), and my old HP laptop (similar reasons). My "track laptop" (newer HP) came with win7, and I'm leaving it there.)

I have 8.1 right now Office 2007 runs under 8.1. Does anybody know if it will run under 10?

Could not get my work computer, which I upgraded to Windows 10, to install and recognize the drivers for my old ATI GPUs so I could get my dual monitors working in extended mode...so I was forced to grab another machine off the shelf (a Dell, rather than the HP I was using), and thankfully when I put my hard drive in, the graphics worked out of the box. Not having the greatest taste for Windows 10 in my work environment so far.

I also don't like the fact that when I lock my workstation, I have to type both my username and password in after the ctrl+alt+delete. In XP, Windows 7, and 8.1, I would only have to type my password. It's the little shit that bugs me :p

I would definitely agree with waiting for those who run their own work-related computers and such. I never jump to the next OS with office computers here until they're well-proven which is one reason I'm running Win7 on everything. Win10 is full of *crap* (imo) that you need to disable to prevent sharing all kinds of stuff with MSFT, but there are many web sites covering all of that stuff. It takes a while to get through the settings in various places and turning off junk like Cortana and OneDrive sharing/storing, etc, etc. Once you do all that, you're left with just a mild Win7 makeover that, performance-wise, isn't significantly different than Win7, again, imo. However, I think it's a huge improvement, by returning to the past, over Win8 junk.

I was dragged into Win10 world by needing to replace my notebook with a new Dell XPS13 (which is an amazing little PC btw), so I spent this past weekend "fixing" all the setup stuff after searching online resources. One custom application I use in my business has some minor incompatibilities with messaging, but I only run that on the notebook when traveling, so it's not critical.

I heard that Win10 comes with an independent rear suspension. I'd avoid it for that reason alone ! :) :)
