Many years ago I inherited an old school cylinder player that's in good working order and about 30 or so cylinders in very good condition. I'd like to capture the music and turn them into mp3's but I'm at a bit of loss on the best way to capture the sound on a wind up player. Haven't dove into the interwebs yet, but thought I'd ask here first since this is an eclectic mix of people.

Thoughts?

In that same vein, I'm starting to up my vinyl record collection. Anyone have some albums they want to off load cheap?

I would guess you would need to get a good quality microphone and recording software. I have been using Roxio easy media creator to dub some of my vinyl to cds.

These days, practically anything can do it. The recording app on your iPhone would do.

(you'll want a "sound room" to get the best out of it... no stray noise from passing traffic, pets, etc.)

Maybe you could build a box with some sound deadening material lining it to put the player and mic or recording device in. Should hopefully keep echos down and record it as best as possible.
